Today we’re going to check out 13 Bones in Mt. Airy, NC. I’m not sure how we even ended up here. We were traveling home from West Virginia and sort of took a side trip. We somehow ended up in Fancy Gap, VA and decided to slide down to Mt. Airy for lunch. Well we rode down Hwy. 52 and landed at 13 Bones between 12 and 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon. They told us we’d have about a 30 minute wait and we decided to stick it out since the weather was nasty and other restaurants would be just as bad. So here we go.
The Restaurant and Staff:
13 Bones has a nice large dining room. Their downside is they don’t have room for a lot of people to wait for tables. I guess that’s a good problem for a restaurant. Once we were seated, and I don’t think it took 30 minutes, we had a nice corner spot in a somewhat secluded area of the dining room. I like the way it’s divided up. It seemed to help keep some of the noise from the large crowd a little lower. Our waitress was Jenny. She was really nice
and kept up with everything we needed even with the crowd. Turns out she was from Virginia Beach. It can be a small world out there. So let’s check out some food.
Our Choices at 13 Bones:
Tammy and I actually both ordered Ribs and Chopped Pork. She had hers with Mac & Cheese and Apples. The mac & cheese was ok. It was a little soupy for our taste. The apples were wonderful. Apples and spice baked up real nice. Tammy ordered her ribs with KC Sauce on the side. She loved them with and without the sauce. They had a good dry rub cooked into them. They were also nice and tender. The pork comes with dipping sauce on the side. Tammy didn’t use the sauce, she liked her pork without any dip.
I ordered Baked Beans and Slaw to go with my ribs and chopped pork. The slaw was a good mayo based slaw. The beans were really good. They kind of had a ketchup and mustard sauce with just a little twang.
I liked my pork with and without the dipping sauce. It was similar to a Lexington Style Sauce. The smoke on the pork had a different flavor. It was good but different. I liked it better with the dipping sauce. I ordered my ribs with a Memphis Style Sauce. They weren’t over sauced and had a great flavor. The sauce had a little twang and a little bite. I really enjoyed them.
Final Thoughts:
I believe this was a good stop for us. We had seen them on a previous trip to the area and chose not to stop due to the crowd. Today we decided to wait it out and I’m glad we did. We stopped in during peak Sunday lunchtime hours. They were very busy, but also well staffed to handle the crowd. Our waitress was wonderful and the food was good. So yes, I believe we made the right choice.
One other note, don’t confuse 13 Bones with the place in Asheville, NC like I did. It is 12 Bones in Ashville.

We had dinner there last nite. My husband had New York Strip and I ordered crab cakes.
Food is always great and reasonably priced. Owners and staff are great and appreciative of their customers.
13 Bones is always our first choice!
Nancy, I would think they’d have a great steak there. But we were there for the Q. I can try different items when we pass through again. Living close to the coast I don’t think about crabcakes out that way. So I am glad to hear it. Thanks for commenting and letting us know. We need to hear from local folks and I do appreciate it.
They have an amazing blackened chicken salad and their desserts are a must!
Pat, thanks for letting us in on the blackened chicken. Though chicken isn’t my favorite I know a lot of folks out there appreciate hearing about it. When we were there we just ate too much for lunch to be able to fit dessert. Maybe next time. Thanks again.
My daughter loves the ribs. We are local and my daughter loves the ribs. A friend got her onto them. Her daddy has been taking her to 13 bones for around 8 yrs on her Birthday every year. Her daddy and my daughter loves this tradition every year. She always gets the ribs on her Birthday. She also likes the bbq chicken they have. She gets it sometimes when, me (her mom) and her go for lunch. We love 13 Bones. A great place to eat. Yum Yum
Sherrie, that sounds awesome. It’s great to have traditions and a good restaurant to share them at. Thanks for the wonderful comments. So glad to hear them.
