Ace Biscuit and Barbecue

Tammy and I have been wanting to check out Ace Biscuit and Barbecue in Charlottesville, VA for a while now. Not too long ago I received an e-mail from someone inviting us to stop in and check them out. They’ve been in business for seven years and do not advertise anywhere. I wasn’t sure what to think. So today we are making the run up there to see what kind of place this is. Come along and let’s check them out.

The Restaurant and Staff:

First let me say, since I’m not familiar with Charlottesville, Ace Biscuit and Barbecue is a little off the beaten path. They’re not too far off of Interstate 64 but I would advise using your GPS to guide you in if you don’t know your way around. It’s really not too hard to find them. When we arrived at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue we were both thinking this place is pretty small. And they are a small business dealing mostly with take-out orders. They did have a couple of tables and some counter seating available. There was also some picnic tables outside if you wanted to sit outside. The staff was wonderful. A very energetic young man named Wolf waited on us. Luckily we arrived before the rush and took a little time to study the menu on the board. I guess we still looked confused so Wolf stepped in and made a suggestion for Tammy to try. I asked him what he suggested for her and it sounded so off the wall and different that I wanted to try the same thing.

Just a note. It seemed like as soon as we sat down to wait on our order another rush came in. This place was jamming. Wolf and a young lady working the counter were amazing to watch. No pressure there. We could also watch the two working in the kitchen. As it turns out one of the workers in the kitchen was Gabi, the person who e-mailed me about coming up. I didn’t say anything to him until we finished eating. This was a smooth running operation. We had a blast talking to Wolf between him taking orders.

Our Choices at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue:

I should also remind you that I mentioned another rush came through. This was right around 12:00. There had to be a morning rush too because they were already out of brisket when we arrived just before 12. So here’s what Wolf had them prepare for us. It doesn’t really have a name so we just went with it. Tammy and

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue

Biscuit with Pulled Pork, Fried Green Tomato and more.

I both had the same.

They started with a homemade biscuit cut in half. On the bottom piece of the biscuit was a slice of fried green tomato which was perfect. The tomato was killer considering it was November, it still had lots of flavor. Then they piled the pulled pork on top of the tomato. The pork was awesome. It had a great smoke flavor, simple seasoning and just fantastic. So on top of the pork they put a fried egg. They fry it anyway you want it. My egg was fried up just the way I asked. It was perfect.

So, are you with me? Imagine what I have so far then add homemade Pimento Cheese on the top. It was so good. In addition to that they put a slice of dill pickle and the top of my biscuit to the side. Even after eating this wonderful creation, I can’t sit here and imagine the combination of flavors that I’ve just told you about. This is something you just have to experience. Don’t try to figure it all out. Wolf said he put his soul into this one. What an awesome guy. I love the imagination and creativity.

Final Thoughts:

I guess you can tell we loved it here. Tammy wanted to go back later but I reminded her that they were running out of food when we were there and they close at 3:00 PM. Yes plan your trip, Ace Biscuit and Barbecue is open 7 days a week from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Also, Wolf told us that they have Hip-Hop on Wednesdays. (This from a reader: It’s Wu Tang Wednesday. They play unedited Wu Tang Clan music all day.) They do have regular platters like in other places too. So needless to say, I will be back to try more. I can’t wait to try the brisket and ribs along with some of the homemade sides. Yes I will have to do more studying prior to going next time so I know what I want. Though if I wait too long, I may just have to get that biscuit again.

I talked to Gabi just a little before we left. He was happy to see us and know that we had made the trip there. It was good to meet him even though he didn’t have time to talk much. I think we will have to try a weekday visit next time and see how that goes.

Finally, to top everything off, after we ate I took Tammy a little further west to Waynesboro. We hopped on the Blue Ridge Parkway and took a little ride south on it. It was still really pretty there on the first weekend in November. Though the higher elevations had lost a lot of the color. This was my first “Fall” trip there in many years. I try to avoid those crowds. It was beautiful and the further south we rode the less crowded it was. What a great Jeep Ride!

You guys have to try the O.D.B., or Ol’ Dirty Biscuit. It’s a biscuit with a fried chicken thigh, pimiento cheese and all covered in gravy. Absolutely fantastic. Also, the hip hop Wednesdays isn’t live hip hop, but it’s Wu Tang Wednesday. They play unedited Wu Tang Clan music all day.

Jody, Thanks for the suggestion on the O.D.B. Sounds wonderful. As for the hip hop I appreciate you clearing that up. Maybe I was just a little scared. I listen to lots of different music but not usually hip hop. Age has its limits. 😉
      Thanks again.
