Well I had a suggestion come in for me to try Alamo BBQ in Richmond, VA. The suggestion was to try out their ribs. So we loaded the cooler into the Jeep and proceeded toward Richmond.
Where Is Alamo BBQ?
Alamo BBQ is located at 2202 Jefferson Ave. in Richmond’s historic Church Hill area. It wasn’t too hard to find off of I-95 North. Even though I did miss a couple of turns making me drive around a few blocks to get back on track. As a word of caution, for some reason Richmond does not like U-turns. And to make it even more interesting my GPS did not respond to turns quick enough to keep me in the right direction. So that said…Good luck and take your time.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Alamo BBQ is an old building on a corner with no dining room. The eating area is like a porch that had been closed in with plastic for the winter. There were also a few tables outside. On our visit it was a little cold for eating outside and the closed in area was quite cool also.
The young lady that took our order was very nice and pleasant. She greeted us as soon as we walked up to her window to place our orders. After our order was put in we picked a table near the front where the sun was shining for a little more warmth. When the food was ready someone called out my name and I went to another window to pick up my food. No one was at that window. They were working on the next order I guess.
What We Ate at Alamo BBQ:
When we got to Alamo BBQ I did not remember the part of the recommendation about the ribs. So I ordered a three meat combo. Mine included Pulled Pork, Brisket, and Smoked Sausage. For my sides I ordered the Jalapeno Mac & Cheese, Slaw and the Cowboy Beans. Tammy ordered a two meat combo. Hers was with Pulled Pork and Brisket also. Her sides were the Texas Caviar and Collard Greens. Hers also came with a piece of cornbread for her third side.
Ok, here’s where we take a step back. Starting with my meats. The Sausage was like a Hillshire Farms Sausage with sauce on it. Not what I’m looking for at a bbq joint. I’m not sure about the Pulled Pork or the Brisket. They each had too much sauce on them to taste the meat. The pork did have a couple of nice chunks and the sauce was pretty good to me. It was like a tomato and vinegar combination but it was a
little too spicy for Tammy. I really wanted to taste more of the meats’ flavors. Tammy’s pork and brisket both had a lot of fat in them. So needless to say we were not thrilled with our meat choices.
As for our sides some were good and some not so good. My cowboy beans and slaw were good but the Jalapeno mac & cheese was not. It was dried out and didn’t have much Jalapeno taste. Tammy’s Texas caviar was good. The collards had very large veins in them with very few leafs. Not good considering I always devein my collards before cooking. The cornbread was dried out as well.
Your Thoughts?
So I think you can figure out that Alamo BBQ will not make my “Best Of” list, even though I don’t have one of those. I don’t know if it was just a really bad day or what happened. As I say, I’m giving you a snapshot of one visit on most of the restaurants we visit. If they’re having a bad day, a review like this gets written. Sorry guys.
I have looked at the reviews on their website and they do receive many rave reviews. I also checked out their Facebook page and it’s clear that many people love them.
So the bottom line will have to be that you can try this one at your own risk. Or maybe the locals will chime in to defend them. It will be your choice. My hope is that we just came on the wrong day.
Have you been to Alamo BBQ? Tell us that I had a bad experience and this is not the norm. Let us know how you feel about the food.
If you’re a fan of Alamo BBQ leave us some comments. Your words can help them. At this time I cannot help much. Others would love to hear from you too.
I look forward to hearing from you. Send me your comments and I’ll post them as long as you keep it kid friendly.
You can check out their website at: www.alamobbqva.com They are also on Facebook.
Enjoy the ride, good eating and thanks for stopping by.

Spot on review. Unfortunately the “off-day” has become the norm for this restaraunt
Ferris, Sorry to hear this. I know it was not a good day for us when we visited. I thought others may feel differently. Thanks for the input.
