Allen and Son Bar-B-Que, Pittsboro, NC

September 6, 2019

Who’s ready for a road trip? Today I want to take you down to Pittsboro, NC and visit Allen and Son Bar-B-Que. For any who might be wondering, Pittsboro is just west of Raleigh on Highway 64. They weren’t too hard to find but we landed outside of Raleigh on a Thursday evening rush hour. Well I let my GPS guide me around so we didn’t have to go straight through. I almost felt we went back to Virginia to go around Raleigh. We finally arrived just before the storm clouds let loose. At least we had a little good fortune with the weather. So here’s how things went.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Allen and Son Bar-B-Que is a nice older business. The restaurant seems to be pretty old but is in very good condition. It’s nice and clean on the inside and very comforting. Our waitress, Melisa, was very nice. She knew the menu very well. Once she helped us with our choices, she came back to check on us often to be sure everything was ok. Several more customers came in after we ordered and she worked the whole dining room by herself. I’d also like to add that in addition to the dining room Allen and Son Bar-B-Que has a walk-up window outside that you can use to place your take-out order. The place may look small but they were serving a lot of people.

Our Choices at Allen and Son Bar-B-Que:

Pork Plate with Fried Corn on the Cob and Fresh Cut Fries.

Tammy ordered the BBQ Plate with Fresh Cut-Fries and Deep-Fried corn on the Cob. The plate also comes with Hushpuppies. The fries were killer. They had a great seasoning on them. I love fresh-cut fries anyway. Who has heard of deep-fried corn on the cob? What a wonderful idea. Tammy let me have a bite of it and it was fantastic. That was all I was allowed. She polished it off from there. The pork was coarsely chopped or pulled. It had a great smoke flavor and the spices were just right. Added to that was just a touch of vinegar. The result, some great NC BBQ. And the hushpuppies were just icing on the cake.

The only difference with my order tonight was I picked Fried

Okra over the Fried Corn for my second side. I also had the Pork Plate and Fresh-Cut Fries. The okra was wonderful. Perfect light breading and great taste. I also tried a little of their sauce on the bbq. It was a

strong vinegar based sauce. It was good but I went without extra sauce for the best flavor.

I also ordered a side of Brunswick Stew. Allen and Son Bar-B-Que has some very good Brunswick Stew. It has a great tasting broth with lots of meat and veggies in it. After I was sure Tammy didn’t want anymore of it I added a touch of hot sauce and finished it off.

Final Thoughts:

So, Allen and Son Bar-B-Que turns out to be a really good stop on Patrick’s BBQ Trail. At first I didn’t think we’d ever find them. My first GPS program gave me 2 wrong turns. I switched over to my 2nd GPS and we made it. We did take the scenic route but it was a fun ride. Tammy said she’d walk back for the deep-fried corn on the cob. These are the types of businesses we love to find. Even though Allen and Son BBQ has more than one location, I still think of them as a smaller family run business. If you’re in or near the Raleigh area you should check them out.
