Today we’re going to take a ride to Fredericksburg and check out Allman’s Bar-B-Q. Allman’s Bar-B-Q is a landmark in the area. They have been there since 1954. Located on US Highway 1, Jeff Davis Highway. Not too far off of I-95, my GPS took us right there. Probably the worst part of the trip was having to go up 95. It didn’t help that the closer we got to Fredericksburg the harder it rained and the crazier people drove. So just for kicks and to calm my nerves, we cut over and rode US 17 back home. That was quite a ride but looked like an awesome Jeep ride for later in the spring when the top can come off. Time will tell on that one. Let’s move on with the review.
The Restaurant and Staff:
As I said, Allman’s Bar-B-Q is a landmark. The restaurant is located in an old historic building. Inside you’ll find about 9 tables and 7 stools at the counter. The stools looked like originals from when the restaurant was in its younger days. The walls are painted cinder blocks. The whole dining room was neat, very clean and old fashioned. On the walls were old pictures of buildings in town. A very historic look. I really liked the pictures.
We were greeted with a friendly hello as soon as we walked in the door. They were fairly busy when we arrived. So we went over and chose the only table available. It didn’t take long for our waitress, Lisa, to bring menus and take our drink orders. She was super helpful and friendly.
Our Choices at Allman’s Bar-B-Q:
Tammy ordered the Sliced Pork Plate with Slaw and Onion Rings. Before I go further let me say that at Allman’s Bar-B-Q what they call sliced, we call pulled. The pork is really good. It’s prepared very simply, not a lot of spice and just smoked. The smoke was not overpowering and just made for some good pork. The onion rings were super. They had a good coating and fried perfectly. Let me say that the slaw was really unique. I have to say it’s different from any I’ve had before and that’s a good thing. I can only say try it, I believe you’ll like it.
I also ordered the Sliced Pork Plate. My sides were Baked Beans and Potato Salad. Just in case you’re wondering, the pork is also served chopped, which is minced if you prefer. My potato salad had a pretty good taste though it has a little too much mayo for me. Again, I think this goes back to the old fashioned roots which I love. The beans were the surprise of the evening. There they were, sitting in a small bowl looking like plain old pork n beans out of a can that were heated up. Oh, how quickly my opinion changed once I tried them. They were delicious. I hid my surprise and had Tammy try them and her eyes lit up after tasting them. All I can say is get the beans folks.
I also had a cup of Pork Stew. Some may compare this to Brunswick Stew but I don’t. This stew is awesome…pork, corn, and different beans all blended together in a wonderful broth. You need some of the Pork Stew.
Sauces:
I tried out both of the sauces at Allman’s Bar-B-Q. They have a homemade Traditional Sauce which is really good. Again, it’s different from others that I’ve had. This sauce has sweet and vinegar mixed to create an awesome sauce. This is not tomato base sauce. And their Hot Sauce lives up to its name, “Hot”. I only tried a little and the heat just stayed there, in my mouth, burning. You’ll have to decide if you want to give it a try. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.
Desserts:
We did try out a couple of the desserts at Allman’s Bar-B-Q. Tammy had their Funnel Cake. It was just like at a carnival but smaller. About the size of a honey bun is how Lisa put it. And as would be expected, it was very good. I had a Brownie Sundae. It was simply awesome. Nothing fancy, just a warm homemade brownie with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge sauce. And did I mention that I had to give them extra credit on my brownie? I got a corner. Oh it was love. You really need to save room for one of these.
Final Thoughts:
You know, I really loved this place. Some call it a hole in the wall. Everything is so plain, simple, old fashioned, and friendly. Just sit down and relax. Even though they were pretty quick with service you don’t have to rush. Everyone we talked to was friendly. I think it’s great to be able to enjoy a place that has been in business so long. The other thing that I found interesting at Allman’s Bar-B-Q was the clientele. There was a group of young people sitting at the counter when we arrived. The customers sitting at the tables were all ages. It’s like this place just called everyone together. I just think everything combined makes it a pretty cool stop on the trail.
