We made a lunch stop at BBQ Pit in Monroe, LA as we meandered our way towards Texas and Oklahoma. We decided to go check out the Duck Commander warehouse to see what it was really like. I also remembered an episode of “Duck Dynasty” when the guys went out for bbq. I could not remember the name of the location so we did a Google search. Where would we be without Google Maps? I wouldn’t have thought that many bbq restaurants were near West Monroe. So we decided on this one.
Where is BBQ Pit?
The BBQ Pit is located on Highway 165 N. The official address we found was Monroe, LA. Though I think I crossed a line that said Sterlington, LA. I guess they are right on the line and you should use the Monroe address if you have to do a search for them. We didn’t have any problems finding them.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The restaurant is in a strip of stores and has a corner location. Inside the dining room is medium sized and there are tables outside as well. Our waitress, Rhiannon, was great. She greeted us as we came in and seated us. She helped us through the menu. Keep in mind, again this was supposed to be a lunch stop. Rhiannon had a wonderful personality, helping us with our many choices and laughing with us as we went on with our order. She also told us that the current owner has been here 4 – 5 years. Another BBQ joint was there before but didn’t make it so he bought it. I can’t imagine him doing anything else. So let me get on with this so you can understand why.
Tammy’s Choices at BBQ Pit:
Tammy and I studied the menu and with Rhiannon’s help managed to get 5 different meats. Tammy chose a 2 meat plate with Brisket and Ribs. Her sides were Slaw and Onion Rings. Let’s just say that the slaw was good but with so many other selections we had to try it wasn’t the star attraction, but still good. The onion rings had a homemade batter and fried to perfection. These were awesome.
The sliced brisket was very good. It had really good smoke flavor. I tried it without sauce, with sweet sauce and with hot sauce. This brisket was really good all three ways. Her ribs were killer. Great smoke flavor, great taste, and melt in your mouth. I thought I could be in rib heaven.
And My Choices at BBQ Pit:
Well that leaves me choosing a 3 meat plate with Pulled Pork, Smoked Sausage and Fried Ribs (yes I said “fried”). Along with this I had Homemade BBQ Chips and Baked Beans. The chips were very good. They were served with dipping sauces, Ranch and BBQ Ranch. I ate some without sauce, and some with the BBQ Ranch. Both ways were very good. I didn’t use the plain Ranch dip. The Baked Beans were awesome having a wonderful thick bbq and meat sauce. I couldn’t get enough of them.
The sausage was really good, smoked and grilled to get the flavor and great texture. And for the pulled pork you can see the excellent smokering and some bark mixed in if you look closely at the picture. With the great flavor this pork had I didn’t add any sauce. It was moist and melted away as I chewed. Finally, if you look at the picture of my plate you may wonder about the two items on the back edge. Those my friends are fried ribs. They took 2 beef ribs, coated them with the onion ring batter and fried them. Oh, did I mention they were smoked first?
In reply to Tammy’s ribs, now I know I’m in rib heaven. I couldn’t get over these ribs. How did someone come up with the idea to batter and fry a smoked rib? Rhiannon said he does a lot of cooking for a hunt club, I think it was. Sometimes he just comes up with different ideas and tries them out on the guys first. These ribs were out of this world. The batter was great, then quick fried to lock in the smoke flavor and moistness. They just blew me away.
Sauces:
I did try both the sweet sauce and the hot sauce at BBQ Pit. Both sauces were very good but none of the meats needed sauce. You just have to be in the mood to try some sauce here.
Desserts:
Well just to prove neither Tammy nor myself have good sense, we both ordered dessert. Have mercy on us. Tammy had Homemade Bread Pudding. Usually I don’t like bread pudding but this was really good. It was almost like a cinnamon bun.
And I had their Homemade Banana Pudding which was excellent as well. We were both miserable for a long time after eating all of this. Remember, we’re traveling so there were no doggie boxes going to a motel room not knowing if we could keep them or reheat them.
Final Thoughts:
My final thoughts usually run pretty short but with BBQ Pit I just can’t say enough about how good this place is. You just have to go there. They are definitely worth the jump off of Interstate 20. You don’t have to go too far. This is also one of those places where you can tell that the people love their work and take pride in preparing some of the best food you can get anywhere. This is much more than just skill and knowledge though those traits are evident also. I hope you all have wonderful success for many years to come. Thanks for a wonderful meal. Yes, BBQ Pit is the type of place that makes doing this blog so much fun. What a great place!

Glad you got to try out our little hidden BBQ gem ! We live in the neighborhood across Hwy 165 and go eat every chance we get. We travel a lot for work so when we are home one weekend a month, we make it a point to go there for dinner. I get the dark meat chicken and ribs with chips and corn. Every. Single. Time. 🙂
Oh and I get bread pudding “to go” and enjoy it a few hours after dinner on my couch with a good movie. We are moving to SC next week and I will really miss this place ! Safe travels !
Thanks for the info. It’s always great to hear what others have to say. Good luck in SC. I love it there, lots of family. Thanks again.
I love the bbq I would say it’s the best place in town to eat bbq. The meat is never dry or overcooked. I’ve never eaten anything there there was bad. My favorite thing to get there is the pitloaded with bbq ranch to dip it in and the green beans to go with it they are so good.
Sounds good. I know everything we had was very good. Glad to hear it from others. Thanks.
The name of the BBQ place the guys went to (I believe you are referring to the episode when a NASCAR buddy of Willie’s was in town) is Dankin Trail. It’s a little east of Monroe on US 80. and is not really in the neighborhood of the DD warehouse.
I believe you are right on the episode. I’m not disappointed with our find. Maybe another time. Thanks.
Matt Springfield has done an excellent job with this establishment since he took over. The BBQ PITT has a wonderful staff who tend to treat everyone as friends and that’s just as good as the food.. ” THE FOOD”, you won’t find better BBQ anywhere and the Fried Ribs are the very best..
Thank you Stuart. Great to hear about the folks working there. We thought everyone we met was great. No doubts about any of their food. We appreciate your comments.
It’s a great place owned by a good dude and a friend, which I kinda grew up with his older sister but any how, he has really put a lot of time and effort into that establishment. I’ve eating there quite a few times and I’ve never been disappointed even when I usually arrive around closing time. Their deserts are to die for and their pulled pork or brisket sandwiches are great as well! Ima have to try the homemade BBQ chips I hadn’t tried them yet! Lol.
You should try the chips. I’m glad to hear that everyone seems to be in agreement about the food and the people. We really did enjoy BBQ Pit. If there were any doubt, the fried ribs sealed the deal. Thanks for your input.
