Update: We recently made a trip back out to the mountains of VA and unfortunately Big Jons has gone out of business.

Well we got lucky again. While traveling out Hwy. 58 to the mountains we passed by a new bbq restaurant in Meadows of Dan, VA. So once we went and found the cabin we were going to spend the weekend in we went back to try them out.

Knowing that we were now in the mountains I figured I was in for a different type of bbq from my normal Eastern NC style. Yep, I was right. This was more like a Memphis / Tennessee style…Sweet Heat I believe they say. And if you like a little heat, it was right on time.

I had the ribs and Tammy had the pulled pork thus giving me a combo plate. I got more than planned since she is not into the heat part. They did light it up some with what I believe to be cayenne pepper and black pepper. I thought it rocked, she did not.

The sides were really good too. We both had coleslaw. I had baked beans and she had green beans. The cornbread was also pretty good.

Traveling out 58 in VA or on the Blue Ridge Parkway and want to try some good bbq? Check this one out if you can stand the heat. For Parkway travelers, Meadows of Dan is about a mile south of Mabry Mill.

After eating try the country store across the street from the restaurant. Lots of neat stuff to check out. It’s a nice little diversion from traveling.
