Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery, Winchester, VA

April 26, 2019

Tammy and I made a stop at Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery in Winchester, VA on our way home from a recent trip to PA. After eating a large breakfast in PA we were finally getting hungry by the time we hit the VA line. So after a little phone searching, Bonnie Blue it was. On line they seemed like a pretty cool place to stop.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery

Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery. Winchester, VA

Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery is located on Boscawen St. According to their website the building is a restored 1920 Esso Station. When we first walked in my first impression was this place is really small and we’d be eating lunch in the Jeep. As far as the size went it was like walking into the front of an old gas station, not a modern convenience story type everyone is used to today. But looks can be and were deceiving. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and shown to the very nice and large dining room in the back. There was also a door in that room you can come in or leave from. There was even another dining room further back. And then add some outside seating too. So there is no shortage of seating. Our waitress, Kenzie, forgive me if spelled wrong, was wonderful. She was very friendly and put up with our indecision really well. She explained some of the choices to us. She just made us feel very welcomed.

Tammy’s Choices at Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery:

The Two Play, 2 Meat Platter with Sliced Brisket and Kielbasa.

Tammy ordered the The Two Play, 2 Meat Platter. She went with Brisket and Kielbasa. She chose Mac & Cheese and Fried Apples for her sides. The brisket was wonderful. It had a good smoke ring and some really nice smoke flavor, not overpowering. The brisket was also moist and tender and just melted in your mouth. The Kielbasa was even better. They failed to mention that it is homemade. I was thinking of a grocery store summer sausage type. This was nothing like that. It wasn’t hot or spicy, just some great tasting sausage. Bonnie Blue gives you a special sauce to use with the Kielbasa. The sauce was also very good but it’s not needed.

The mac & cheese was also very good. It was creamy and cheesy. Just a good homemade mac and cheese. The fried apples were awesome. They had a great spice mixture and fried up just right. Both of these made wonderful sides for her meal.

And My Choices:

The Diesel 3 Meat Sampler with Sliced Brisket, Pulled Pork & Ribs.

I chose The Diesel 3 Meat Sampler. They say it’s named after Redskins’ John Riggins. Even though I’m not a big Redskins fan I have always been a fan of John Riggins. So I picked the meal named in his honor. Mine came with Pulled Pork, Brisket and Ribs. For sides I went with Slaw and Hand Cut Fries. The pork was really good. It had a nice smoke ring and a mild smoke flavor. At Bonnie Blue they pull the pork in large chunks. I was very happy with my pork. One thing about my brisket that wasn’t mentioned with Tammy’s brisket. I got an end piece, nice and burnt and I loved it. I don’t think Tammy saw that. The ribs had more smoke and a light sauce. These were some excellent ribs, with good flavor and tender as well.

The slaw has a lot of vinegar. It was actually a little too much for me. I ended up trading Tammy the slaw for her apples. She liked the vinegar. And the fresh cut fries were delicious. I love some fresh cut fries and these didn’t let me down.

Dessert:

Well how can you resist when the restaurant is named Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery. You have to try dessert, right? We did. Tammy had something that I don’t know the name of. It was like Chocolate Fudge and had caramel mixed in it. It’s hard to describe other than wonderful. As for me, I just got a Chocolate Chip Cookie. Well it did cover most of a saucer and it was delicious. I’m thinking you can’t go wrong with their baked goods. Just save a little room or get some to go.

Final Thoughts:

I believe we found another gem this time. We very much enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere, and the people. When you get all these ingredients mixed in just right it’s hard to go wrong. I’d love to pay Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery another visit one of these days. So yes, I’d recommend giving them a try. If traveling on I-81 check them out when you get to Winchester. You will go into the historic downtown area, but what a great chance to relax and unwind from the interstate traffic for a little while. Winchester is a cool city to visit. Lots of history and at the right time of the year, lots of apples. Check them out.
