Our next stop for the BBQ Trail is The Boundary on 66 in Luther, OK. We finally made it to Oklahoma City for the second wedding of our trip. On this evening I searched for somewhere off the beaten path to try. There were several places closer to our location but seemed to be in the downtown area and I did not want to get into Friday rush hour traffic again. Therefore we opted for a ride away from the city. Here’s what we found.
What is Rt. 66?
For any East Coasters that have never heard of Rt. 66 you should check it out. This highway predates our Interstate system and in its prime connected Chicago with Los Angeles. All along this highway people built businesses of all sorts from gas stations, restaurants, motels and anything else that may be of interest to traveling people. Today much of the system has been swallowed up by cities or just neglected and left to decay. There are many areas where you can still travel Rt. 66 through the mid-west. I don’t know how far you can go but I do know it still passes through parts of Oklahoma and Texas heading west.
I know that I can’t do this highway justice so check out this website: https://www.historic66.com/ This site is devoted totally to the highway and can lead you to answers for any questions you may have. If you love to travel off the Interstates like we do, you’ll love this road.
One other quick note before I get back to the restaurant. We did have to make one stop before we made it to The Boundary on 66. This is a store/restaurant that Tammy read about called Pops. They claim to have over 700 different soda pops to choose from. The landmark giant soda bottle out by the highway marks the spot. This is the site of the original location in Arcadia, OK. Visit their website for more fun facts about Pops at: http://www.pops66.com/
Where is The Boundary on 66?
The Boundary on 66 is located where else? It’s on Historic Route 66. Thus the name. I actually found this one doing a “Google Maps” search for bbq. It looked pretty cool and we weren’t staying far off of Rt. 66 so we hit the road heading east from Oklahoma City. As I said about this highway, it was a very nice ride.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The Boundary on 66 is a pretty cool little restaurant. Run by the owners, Donnie cooks and his wife, Buffy, waits tables in addition to cleaning the dining room and working the register when you’re ready to leave. I hope I got her name right. Please forgive me if I didn’t. However, they do work very well together. And they work hard to keep the food moving and providing great service. There’s only 8 or 9 tables in the dining room. We had to wait about 10 minutes when we arrived to get seated. This gave us time to soak in the cool decorations. This place is very rustic with a modern touch if that makes sense. The floors, walls and ceiling are all made with board slats. The current owners have been here a couple of years. Someone else actually did the remodeling. The old picture that I saw looked like it should have been torn down. They did a great job not only remodeling but also saving an old historic building on Rt. 66.
Now let’s move along to the food.
Our Choices at The Boundary on 66:
As different as this may sound, Tammy ordered a Smoked Bologna Sandwich with Cheese. She had Baked Beans for her side. The beans were wonderful. Donnie said they’re just good ole Oklahoma baked beans. All I know is they were very good. Now the sandwich had 3 thick slices, 3/8” or better each, plus the cheese on toasted bread. It was so good. She could only eat half of it. This turned out in our favor because we ate the rest of it the next day before the wedding to tie us over. Good the second day too.
I had their Pulled Pork Sandwich with Potato Salad and added a cup of Chili to go with it all. The chili was good. It wasn’t like what I’m used to, there were no beans. It did have a good chili flavor though. I really liked their version of chili. The potato salad was very good. It had a slight mustard and just a bit of a sweet taste. Felt like home.
The pulled pork was wonderful and the bun was very large and slightly toasted. This seemed to be the perfect bbq sandwich. I started with no sauce then tried some mild sauce and after that I tried the hot sauce. It was great all three ways.
The pork was pulled into large chunks and piled onto this bun. I had added the cup of chili to be sure I would have enough to eat. After all I was only ordering a sandwich. Well I was stuffed when I finished.
Final Thoughts:
We talked to Donnie and his wife after dinner. Both were so nice and grateful that we stopped in. We really enjoyed talking to them. The Boundary on 66 is a great place and the next time we go to Oklahoma City I will pay them another visit. The places we find and people we meet like these are one of the big things that make this such a fun hobby. So far Oklahoma has been very good to us.
