Today I want to take you on a serious Jeep Ride to Caino’s BBQ At The Red Barn in Hubert, NC. OK, so where is Hubert you may ask? To be honest, I had never heard of it until we went here today. Hubert and Caino’s BBQ are located on the Intracoastal Waterway. They’re not far from Swansboro or Emerald Isle. Does that help? This was definitely a GPS trip and a beautiful ride. The restaurant is located at the end of Shell Rock Landing Rd. They’re pretty much the end of the line. So here’s what we found.
Be sure to check their hours out. At this time they are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Please keep this in mind.
The Restaurant and Staff at Caino’s BBQ:
Caino’s BBQ opened in September 2015 so they’ve been up and running for a little while. We showed up in the middle of the afternoon and they seemed to stay pretty busy. On the outside the name does not deceive you, it looks like a big red barn. Inside was immaculate. Everything was very clean. As soon as someone left, the tables were cleaned and wiped down. They have a mix-match bunch of tables and chairs in the fairly large dining room. I loved the décor. It just felt very homey and welcoming.
Everyone there was very friendly as well. We met Dave and Sheila the owners/operators. They were wonderful people and help us to feel right at home. Of course they did think we were a little off when we told them we rode over 3 hours to eat there. We didn’t tell them why until later. They were equally shocked when we told them we would drive back home after we ate. At first I think Sheila thought we were kidding. The restaurant was great so let’s move on to some food.
Our Choices at Caino’s BBQ:
Tammy and I both ordered their Try All Five Sampler. This truly gives you all five of their smoked meats, Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, Smoked Sausage, a Smoked Chicken Leg Quarter and Ribs. The sampler also comes with 2 sides. Tammy chose Mac & Cheese and Slaw for her sides and I went with Baked Beans and Potato Salad.
I’ll start with the sides. You know, we’ve been to a lot of restaurants that serve really awesome smoked meats. The best of them also have truly remarkable sides to go with the meats. So at Caino’s BBQ here’s what our sides were like.
The slaw was really good. It was finely shredded and has a slight sweet taste. The mac & cheese was fantastic. This mac & cheese was up there with the best of them. The cheese taste was incredible. It’s a “must have” side when you go here. And the baked beans I had were also really good. Tammy thinks they had some brown sugar in the mix. Could be, I just know they were good. The potato salad was another top shelf side. Made with red skin potatoes
along with a little relish and even some boiled eggs cut up pretty fine. And I usually don’t like boiled eggs. This also had a hint of mustard to it. All in all a great Southern Style potato salad. All of our sides were wonderful.
The Meats at Caino’s BBQ:
All the meats at Caino’s BBQ are Hickory smoked. The pulled pork was awesome. It probably had the strongest of the smoke flavor. Along with the spices and plenty of bark mixed in this pork it was moist and just wonderful. Dave has done an excellent job on his brisket. It had a nice smoke ring and a wonderful blend of spices. And again, the smoke flavor. He said the brisket is getting more popular all the time and with good reason.
Now the ribs were just outstanding. These too were seasoned just right and had that great smoke flavor. The ribs just melt in your mouth. I was loving these ribs. Now I don’t want to slight the sausage here. Dave doesn’t make the sausage but is thinking about trying his hand at it. In the meantime, he has an awesome supplier. I loved this sausage. It wasn’t spicy hot but had a fantastic flavor. This is a sausage anyone can love. The fantastic flavor and the smoke combined to make an awesome sausage. They also have a homemade mustard sauce which I really enjoyed with the sausage. I ate about half with and half without sauce.
Now I saved the chicken leg quarters for last kind of on purpose. Those who follow our BBQ Trail know I’m not a big fan of chicken. Nothing personal, I just go more for the pork and then the beef. Most of the time when I have chicken on here is because Tammy ordered it and I tried hers. Well this time I had my own and I’m glad I did. I couldn’t stop eating this chicken. The smoke went beyond the skin and deep into the meat. It was some of the best smoked chicken I’ve ever eaten. I loved this yard bird.
And For Dessert:
Yes, talk about punishment, we had to try some dessert. Well we actually knew we were going to get it so we saved room. Remember the cooler rule. Always travel with one for leftovers.
Tammy had a warm homemade brownie with ice cream and sprinkles. It was great. She loved it. And I had warm homemade peach cobbler with ice cream. It don’t get no better than that. The cobbler had just the right amount sweetness to it. I really hope they have it again next time we visit.
Final Thoughts on Caino’s BBQ:
You know, we have really been fortunate with our travels lately. After staying home for nearly a year due to the Covid19 virus we’ve finally ventured out to a couple of spots. This is our first time back in North Carolina since Covid. And to just pick this spot off of a map to try seems like more than just dumb luck. I really think we were supposed to visit Caino’s BBQ. I am so glad we did. My biggest concern is trying to tell others how to get there because you need to check them out. Like I said, this was a great ride for us. Mainly small highways. We did ride over to Emerald Isle after eating but the weather just wasn’t inviting for a walk on the beach. Maybe next time.
I do hope that anyone who reads this will pay them a visit. Dave and Sheila were wonderful to meet and get to know a little better. This was worth every minute of the 3.5 hour drive. We are thrilled to have found this spot. I encourage any of you who like to go for a ride to plan a trip. Same with the beach goers down there. Check out their website or Facebook page and hunt them down. I know I look forward to another trip down the coast to see how they’re doing. Work out a road trip. You’ll be glad you did.

So glad you loved it . Boss and I come here to dredge and rebuild the beach every other year . We currently stay a mile from Cainos. They never disappoint.
Candi. What a great place to stay from what we saw. A mile away, I could really work on that menu of theirs. Glad to hear others enjoy them as much as we did. Thanks for letting us know.
The Seafood at Cainos is worth the trip. You should definitely go back and try it.
Thanks. We will go back but it will still be hard not to get the smoked meats. We will see. Thank you for the info.
