We headed back down into North Carolina to check out Captain Bob’s BBQ and Seafood. A lot of people have recommended them to us so we thought we should add them to the BBQ Trail. Many people probably know them from their catering business. Several places we know use them for bbq fundraisers. But to be a stop on the trail we had to go to their restaurant.
Note: From this point on I will refer to them as Captain Bob’s.
Where’s Captain Bob’s Located?
Captain Bob’s is located on Hwy. 17 in Hertford, NC. They’re not far south of Elizabeth City or the VA line. They have a large sign out front so they aren’t hard to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Captain Bob’s has a pretty large dining area with plenty of tables to choose from. Everyone we met was really nice and friendly. We were greeted as soon as we came in. Once seated our waitress came to take our orders.
They have a lot of nautical and fishing decorations. They are a “nothing fancy, come as you are” type of family restaurant. When we went there were a couple of families there and some fishermen started arriving while we were there. So no dressing up to come to this one. If you’re out and about you can just drop in.
Our Choices at Captain Bob’s:
I decided to try out the buffet while we were there. I chose Chopped Pork and Fried Chicken to start with. And I picked Scalloped Potatoes and Baked Beans to go with them.
I honestly thought that the chopped pork was average. Not bad, but not to brag about. It was pretty well chopped, just shy of being fine or minced. It had some vinegar flavor as NC BBQ should, but there was no smoke flavor.
The fried chicken was much better. I had a breast and a leg. Both were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Very good chicken.
My scalloped potatoes were pretty good but not warm enough. Sometimes this is just a downfall of eating from a buffet. It didn’t take long for them to cool off to the point that I couldn’t finish them. Which goes against everything I believe when it comes to food. I always finish what I put on my plate unless there is something wrong with it. I don’t believe in waste. The baked beans, like the pork, to me were average. They made a good side but nothing to set them aside from other restaurants.
Tammy also had the fried chicken and a salad so nothing different to talk about there.
Final Thoughts:
Well I’m thinking that for the distance that Captain Bob’s is from my house this was sort of disappointing. However, keep in mind that we are traveling in search of great bbq. I will say that if I lived there or if I were traveling Hwy. 17 in that area, I would stop again. They are a good restaurant to stop in for a quicker than normal dinner, depending on how much you eat. They just are not a restaurant that I’d travel over 100 miles to eat their bbq.
Your Thoughts:
Ok, I’ve probably ruffled a few feathers with this one but it’s how I feel. Not every restaurant that we eat at makes it to my top ten. So tell me what you think. I’m open for your comments. Feel free to defend Captain Bob’s if you wish. I mean I don’t dislike them so you will not hurt my feelings if they are your favorite bbq joint in the world.
What do you regulars think?
I know that Captain Bob’s has a lot of regular customers. Speak up and be heard. I’ll post your comments on the site. You don’t have to agree with me, just disagree politely and stay “kid friendly”. I’ll get your comments posted as soon as possible.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Their Facebook page hasn’t been updated in a very long time so I really wouldn’t bother going to it.
