Today we decided to visit The Classic Grill in Blackstone, VA. This was a unique visit since we go to an antique mall there periodically. We ate here once before but paid no attention to them having bbq on the menu. Today started out no differently. You see we were heading for West Virginia to my sister’s home for a family Christmas get together. I had a place in western Virginia picked out to try for dinner so we were after a light lunch. Something along a sandwich but not fast food. So we decided to drop by The Classic Grill thinking we’d eat light and get back on the road. Well surprises do happen so here we go.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The Classic Grill is set up like one of the old diners you still see now and then. It’s very nice. They just have it set up that way. If you’re traveling on Highway 460, Blackstone is about 3 miles off the bypass. The Classic Grill is right on Main Street shortly after arriving in the downtown area. Easy to get to and plenty of parking available.
Our waitress, Cherish, was very friendly. Once she told us they had a brisket special going on we took a different look at the menu. Well low and behold there was pulled pork on the menu also. Cherish told us that they sell a lot of both and it is cooked there. Actually the smoker is across the street in a parking lot. So much for grabbing a sandwich, we were on to check out the bbq and their homemade sides. Yep, a light lunch.
Our Choices at Classic Grill:
Tammy went with the Sliced Brisket special. It came with 2 sides. She couldn’t decide on a second side so she doubled up on the Mac & Cheese. And yes the mac & cheese was very good. We weren’t sure about the brisket when we first saw it. It was sliced very thin. Both of us were thinking it wouldn’t be that good judging by the appearance. Well fortunately we were wrong. The brisket turned out to be quite tasty and had a very good smoke flavor. This was a wonderful surprise. Tammy also tried their homemade Apple BBQ Sauce. She really enjoyed this sweeter sauce. And the roll served with the meal was just icing on the cake. It was a wonderful addition to the meal.
I ordered Pulled Pork with Fries and Slaw. The fries were crinkle cut fries. There was no extra seasoning on them. The slaw was very good. It had just a slight sweet hint to it. The pork was excellent. It had a very good smoke flavor and a little bark mixed in as well. I also tried some with their homemade NC Sauce. It was kind of a cross between Eastern and Western NC sauces. It really had a good taste to it.
Final Thoughts:
So The Classic Grill turned out to be a pleasant surprise for a bbq stop. We went in to grab a sandwich for lunch and found a little bbq gem. I’m so glad we tried it. It just goes to show you that you can’t judge a restaurant by the appearance. We came in at lunch time and they kept everything moving smoothly. The tables and the dining room were kept clean as people were leaving. We really enjoyed our visit. I would never have tagged this one for a bbq stop. It is nice to be wrong sometimes. Well at least now we know that when we go to Blackstone for some antique shopping we can go across the street for some good bbq or maybe that sandwich I missed out on. Or if you’re traveling out on Hwy. 460 this is a nice stop along the way. Give them a try and I think you’ll be glad you did. The friendly service and the good food made this a good stop on Patrick’s BBQ Trail.
