Wow. I just hit the delete key on the Cowling’s BBQ review I had already written. You see, we had stopped there some time back. I’m not even sure how long ago it was. We really didn’t care for their bbq much. So in fairness to them I’ll just leave it at that. I didn’t want to post their review without any pictures so I decided to give them one more try. I wanted everything fresh in my mind before I posted their review. I really want to find something good, even in the places that I don’t care for. There has to be a reason they stay in business, right?
So I actually decided to stop at Cowling’s for lunch on my birthday. Tammy wasn’t thrilled with the idea but she went along with it. After all I did need pictures for the post. Well I’m glad we did and she was quite surprised also.
Where Is Cowling’s BBQ?
Well Cowling’s BBQ is located right on Highway 460 just outside of Waverly, VA. They have a nice size sign at the highway and a very large parking lot.
You can’t miss them.
The Restaurant and Staff:
My first thought was that maybe they had changed management. Inside the dining room looked cleaner and brighter to me than the previous visit. I felt we may be off to a good start.
We were greeted as soon as we came in and told we could sit anywhere we wanted to. Once seated our waitress came to get our drink orders and give us menus. She was very nice and did a good job during our whole visit. They have a fair size dining room that offers plenty of seating. All the employees seemed pleasant and willing to offer assistance to anyone in need. We were quite pleased with all of them.
What We Ate at Cowling’s BBQ:
I decided to get the Pork BBQ Plate with slaw and onion rings. The waitress told us that the onion rings were homemade and they’re very good. Oh how right she was. If you didn’t like anything else they have, the onion rings are worth stopping for. The slaw was also good and seemed to be homemade. I didn’t ask about it though.
Now the bbq…it was really good. Their pulled pork had a nice smoke flavor. It was also good and moist. I managed to get a few of the “burnt” edges with my meal and they were good as well.
Tammy was still skeptical when we placed our orders so she went with the fried chicken special they had that day. She also ordered the onion rings but decided on peaches with cottage cheese for her second side. I wouldn’t go there but she likes it. I didn’t get to try the chicken but she says it is good. With it being a special it was small, only a thigh and a leg. So she ate hers this time.
We decided to get dessert after our meal. Tammy went with the chocolate meringue pie and I had the apple pie with ice cream. Both pies were good. Mine had a nice flakey crust which could have been homemade but I don’t know if it was.
My Thoughts on Cowling’s BBQ:
So, my take on Cowling’s BBQ you may wonder…I will stop in again. The bbq was really good. It’s not the best I’ve ever had but it’s good and worth stopping for. I’d like to see more choices on the menu such as ribs, brisket and/or sausage. The sides we chose were good and the whole experience was very nice. And again, the onion rings are worth a stop in them selves.
Give them a try next time you’re riding out on Highway 460 near Waverly, VA.
