Tammy and I decided to make a little run down to Currituck BBQ Company in Elizabeth City, NC. You may recall some time back I wrote about them. You can see that post here: https://www.patricksbbqtrail.com/currituck-bbq-company-currituck-nc/ . And the original was written back in Dec of 2015 so believe me, it could also use an update. That may come later. Well, this is a new location for them. So when someone opens a second restaurant we like to check them out. Elizabeth City is not far from us so off we went. Keep in mind that the visits we’re making now are still under Covid19 restrictions. Many small restaurants are having a hard time getting customers in their doors. We’re still peculiar about where we travel and still stick close to home. So here’s how it went.
The Restaurant and Staff at Currituck BBQ Company, Elizabeth City, NC:
Currituck BBQ Company Elizabeth City in what I believe was an old gas/service station, for those who remember when you could get your car worked on at a gas station. It’s on Route 17 Business or Hughes Blvd. One word of warning, if you click on their site for directions Maps will direct you to their original location in Barco, NC. I had to put the address in for my GPS to get me there. No big deal if you know about it.
The staff was nice. The couple of employees we saw were young and very polite. They seemed to be a good working crew. Let’s check out our meals.
Tammy’s Choices at Currituck BBQ Company, Elizabeth City, NC:
Tammy ordered Burnt Ends with Slaw and Mac & Cheese. The meal also came with hush puppies. The first mistake tonight if you look at the pictures you’ll see my sides on Tammy’s plate and I have her sides. Not a big deal since we were sitting inside to eat. We just swapped off. Both the slaw and the mac & cheese were very good. As much as we don’t like to compare restaurants to other ones we do tend to compare a new location to the original. We expected these sides to be good and they were.
We did have an issue with the burnt ends. I actually took her plate back because I thought they put the wrong meat on it. This meat had a wonderful flavor but it was not burnt ends. Tammy has had me drive to Barco on occasion just so she could get burnt ends at the original location. I pointed this out to the young lady at the counter and she assured me we had the right food. OK, so that didn’t turn out so well. Like I said though the beef had a wonderful smoke flavor. I’ll just leave it at that.
My Choices:
Today I went with the Three Meat Combo Platter with Brisket, Pork and Ribs. For sides I went with Fried Okra and Baked Beans. I also had hush puppies which were excellent. I didn’t mention them above but didn’t want to leave them out. My sides were good as well. I do think the Styrofoam containers take a little away from the flavor but that happens everywhere right now. That’s just how a lot of food is being served. But even with that, the sides were really good.
I’ll start with the brisket. At Currituck BBQ Company Elizabeth City they chop their brisket and serve it with sauce. It’s good, just not my favorite. Again, that just goes back to personal choices. I prefer sliced brisket with no sauce. But all in all it did have a good flavor and I had no problem eating it all. The ribs were very good and also served with sauce. They had a really good flavor and were nice and tender. Yes, I ate all them also. I do tend to get a little messy with ribs so once I got going I finished them off so I could clean up and finish the rest of my meal.
Then came the pork. It’s a nice NC Pork which is also chopped. It’s not minced. Again, I like to try the meat without sauce but I was raised on Eastern NC BBQ so I do enjoy getting into some vinegar based Q at times. And this was one of those times. I did enjoy the pork bbq and would get it again.
Final Thoughts:
I know this is not a raving review and these are tough times. I have to be honest. And in reality we did enjoy the overall visit. As I said Elizabeth City is not too far from us and we do go there on occasion. I would not hesitate to return to Currituck BBQ Company Elizabeth City. A lot of restaurants are having problems getting quality meats from suppliers, especially brisket, and that makes it difficult for everyone. I do feel that some of the minor things will go away with experience too. Again, this is a new restaurant location with new employees. I believe that our next visit will be even better than the first. So go give them a try. See what you think.

I think you guys were super forgiving on our review? Those pictured were NOT Burnt Ends and if she told me they were I would have demanded my money back and left! She was covering up the fact that they got it wrong (As Well As Mixing Up The Sides In The Wrong Boxes) I don’t care how long they have been open that is no excuse for bad orders or covering up and saying yes they are Burnt Ends? The owner needs to train his workers better and get this place up to par!!!!!!!!
I do believe the sides were an honest mistake that will be corrected with training and experience. The burnt ends were the problem and I think the management will address that. We will see. Thanks for the comments.
