Let me introduce you to Dickie-Do’s BBQ in Haw River, NC. I think it’s about time to head to North Carolina again to check out some restaurants. So we planned a little run to Charlotte to check out a boot store and decided to go half way the day before. We spent the night in Mebane, NC just west of Durham. This turned out great since it gave us a chance to find an extra restaurant on our little outing. So if you’re traveling on I-85 / I-40 between Burlington and Durham you need to plug this place into your GPS for a little side trip and some lunch or dinner. They may seem off the beaten path but they’re not really that far from the interstate.
The Restaurant and Staff at Dickie-Do’s BBQ:
Dickie-Do’s BBQ is located in a small brick building with maybe 10 tables inside and some more seating outside. I’d say the dining room is cozy but also very clean. They are good at wiping everything down as soon as a customer leaves. Everyone we talked to was very friendly. When I met Matt, the owner/pitmaster, his concern was the customer service with all the young people working in the restaurant. I assured him they were just as friendly as they could be and also very respectful. So we have a small town family owned and operated business being run by young people. Well their parents can be proud of them. They all were doing an excellent job. Now let’s check out the food.
Tammy’s Choices at Dickie-Do’s BBQ:
Unfortunately when we arrived they were out of Brisket and Rib Tips. Matt was telling me that he’s still having problems with suppliers and being able to get the quality meats he wants to serve. Sad this is still happening but I will not hold that against them. We’ll focus on what we did have instead of what we didn’t get to try.
Tammy went with a Pork Plate with White Slaw and Mac & Cheese. The slaw was really good. It had just a hint of sweetness to it. They also serve a red slaw for anyone interested in a touch of Western NC flavor. If you’ve never tried it you owe it to yourself to give it at least one shot. Be sure you like vinegar though. I thought her mac & cheese was good also. There was plenty of cheese in it and it had a nice little crisp area around the edges. I love that part.
The Pulled Pork at Dickie-Do’s BBQ had a nice smoke flavor. You can see the smoke-ring in the pictures. Their Q is certified wood cooked by an organization known as TrueCue.org. They’re a group that searches for wood cooked meats totally. No gas used here. So along with the smoke flavor and smoke-ring we also had plenty of bark. They’re doing a really nice job smoking the pork.
And My Choices at Dickie-Do’s BBQ:
I had a Two Meat Plate with Pork and Ribs. I went with Fried Okra and Sour Cream Potatoes for my sides. The fried okra was wonderful. It had a light breading and cooked perfectly. This was some of the best fried okra I’ve had in some time. And the sour cream potatoes were a really good surprise. Usually I don’t like sour cream and I’m not sure what made me order these but I’m glad I did. They’re kind of like a potato casserole.
I’ve already told you about the pork but I do want to add one little bit. I added sauce to some of my pork just for something different. It didn’t need the sauce but when I tried it I thought it was really good. It was a homemade vinegar based sauce with a slight tomato twist. I really enjoyed it. I thoroughly enjoyed the ribs as well though I became a little scared eating them there once I found out they ran out of ribs also. Matt worried about them not being tender, again referring to his supplier not being able to provide the ribs he’s accustomed to preparing. I did not think they were tough and enjoyed every one of them. They also come with sauce but it didn’t drown out the smoke flavor.
Final Thoughts on Dickie-Do’s BBQ:
Over all I think this turned into a very good stop along the trail. So they didn’t have everything, it happens. This isn’t the first place we’ve been to that sold out of meats. That’s a good thing. Cuts back on waste and assures you that what they are serving is fresh. I thought Matt was a very nice man and very busy. I didn’t want to hold him up as he was trying to leave but he stayed and talked to me about the business. They also do catering and a food truck. He needed to get the smokers fired up for the next day’s events. All of the young people working there were great. Again, parents be proud and Matt don’t worry.
This is a good stop off the beaten path. Traveling the interstate, this is a good place to slide into and slow down just a bit. And as I said, Dickie-Do’s BBQ is not that far off I-85. To us they were very much worth the visit. Stop in and check them out when you’re in the area.
Now For Your Thoughts:
Here’s where I ask for your opinions about Dickie-Do’s BBQ. I know they were doing a lot of take-out orders while we were there. So, they must have a good following. Fill us in on the rest of the menu. The brisket must be good. Everyone ordering it seemed so disappointed when they learned it was sold out. Tell us about it. We really love to hear from the locals about their restaurants.
We’d also like to hear from others who, like us, just passed through. Did your experience go as well as ours did? Do you go back by once in a while when you’re heading out on that interstate?
I look forward to hearing from you. Just scroll down and leave your comments in the box and I’ll get them posted as soon as I can.
