Well I hope everyone is doing well and weathering this storm as well as possible. Tammy and I still are not traveling but we managed to find a new spot in Virginia Beach so we decided to try them out. I have refrained from reviewing any new places during this time since I don’t feel it’s fair to you or to the owners of the restaurant. And I will probably revisit Donnie’s Barbecue again once everything opens back up. But for now, we just needed to get out.
I will say that I do love our Jeeps but I do not like to try to eat in them. With that said, please forgive the photos included with this post. Yes, that is my leg being used for my table and Tammy’s hands holding the other food. Not a nice spread like normal, sorry. That’s another reason we’ve avoided new places. So let’s check this place out.
The Restaurant and Staff at Donnie’s Barbecue:
Donnie’s Barbecue is a new restaurant. They’ve only been open for about two months. Opened just in time to be shut down by the government. They, like so many others, are depending on carryout orders to keep them afloat. Donnie also has a food truck which he ran for 8 years prior to opening the restaurant. We did go in to place our order. They have a nice spot in Strawbridge Marketplace shopping center on General Booth Blvd.
Both Donnie and the young man taking the orders, Matthew I believe, were very nice. We enjoyed talking to both of them. Tammy really enjoyed talking to Donnie since he and his wife are from NY. She found someone who knows where her hometown is. Well we will not hold that against him. Just kidding. He’s not the only local pitmaster that moved here from up north.
Tammy’s Choices at Donnie’s Barbecue:
Today Tammy chose Burnt Ends. She ordered Slaw, Mac & Cheese and Baked Beans for some sides. The burnt ends came with a piece of Cornbread. I’ll start by saying that all the sides at Donnie’s Barbecue are homemade. The slaw is mayo based and very good. I enjoyed the course cut cabbage and the firm texture. And the taste was wonderful. The mac & cheese was delicious. They make theirs with white cheddar. Like I always tell Tammy, Cheddar is better. I loved it.
Finally the baked beans were awesome. They use brisket in the beans for seasoning. We both loved the beans. And I should mention the cornbread. It was a little on the sweet side but not too sweet. I know it may go against my upbringing but I really liked this cornbread better than the corn meal type I grew up on.
Now for the burnt ends. They were fantastic. If you’ve never tried burnt ends you really need to give these gems a try. Not everyone sells them and not everyone can prepare them. Donnie’s Barbecue can definitely prepare them very well. Tammy is a burnt end fanatic and she absolutely loved them. I have to agree with her on these.
My Choices at Donnie’s Barbecue:
I started my meal with some Texas Twinkies. Yes, they are jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese, brisket, Gouda cheese and wrapped in bacon. I’ve seen these at other places and have been wanting to try them for a long time. I was finally able to. These guys are fantastic. Yes, they have some heat to them but not to the point that tears and sweat run down your face. I don’t go for food that hot.
After the Texas Twinkies I had my dinner, NC Pulled Pork and Sliced Brisket. For sides I had Mac & Cheese and Baked Beans. Mine also came with a piece of Cornbread. Since I already talked about the sides let’s go with the meats. The NC pulled pork was good. It does have a lot of vinegar kick to it. I did like it but honestly would prefer a little lighter on the sauce. They also serve a KC Sweet Pork at
Donnie’s Barbecue. I may try it next time. The brisket was wonderful. No sauce on it and none needed. I love to taste the smoke and seasoning on a good slice of brisket.
And for a final touch I also got a Bucket of Ribs. Truthfully, I didn’t eat a rib until I got home later. I loved the ribs. The salt and pepper rub plus the smoke really come out on them. They were wonderful and I will be back for more of them.
Dessert Anyone:
Yes we topped off our meals with dessert this time. We’ve been locked up too long so it was time to splurge a little. Tammy ordered a slice of Peanut Butter Cup Pie. It was great. It tasted like a rich Reese’s Cup. We loved it. I got a piece of Blueberry Cobbler Cheesecake. It was so good. I thought it was even better
than the peanut butter cup. Either way you can’t go wrong. And by the way, Donnie’s Barbecue does not make the desserts. He will tell you that he is a pitmaster not a baker.
Final Thoughts:
So I felt bad about reviewing a restaurant under the conditions we’re living in right now. The Covid19 Virus has everyone turned upside down. I think we all want to be able to sit in a restaurant again and have a meal. But I’m also glad I did. You see, especially at this time, restaurants need our support. Yes we’ve been supporting local spots and bringing our food home but it was just time to go a little further. And hopefully some of you will swing by and check this place out. So if I can help get the word out, I’m glad we went. And I do look forward to going back especially when we can sit down inside and enjoy our meals.
