Let’s take a ride to Corolla, NC to visit Fat Crabs Rib Company. Tammy and I went for a Jeep ride and ended up going across the North Landing River on the Knotts Island – Currituck Ferry. Once in Currituck we decided to ride down to Corolla to check out Fat Crabs Rib Company, a bbq joint we had found on line. They are located on Austin St. in Corolla so they aren’t hard to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Fat Crabs Rib Company looks like your typical “beachy” restaurant on the outside. Once you walk in the seafood overpowers your sense of smell. To me it smelled great but we were there for bbq. The inside looks like a beach seafood shack. Nothing fancy, just some tables and chairs, a hard wood flooring and a large TV for sports.
Our waitress was very friendly and helped answer questions. They had fountain drinks and tea at the back of the dining room, all self-serve.
One last thing to note. There are no restrooms in the restaurant. We were told that there are public restrooms out back, down a ways, a couple of turns, and you’re there. The man we talked to when leaving, not sure if he was a manager or not, felt that people were unreasonable complaining about that. Oh, did I mention it was dark before we left? Well we passed on that adventure and waited till we got to the welcome center at Kitty Hawk.
Our Choices at Fat Crabs Rib Company:
Tonight Tammy ordered the Smoked Beef Brisket Platter with Corn on the Cob and Mac & Cheese. She really liked the corn. I didn’t try it. The mac & cheese was pretty good but not homemade and nothing done to give it that wow factor. But all in all they were two pretty good sides.
The brisket was ok but it tasted more like a roast than brisket. There was no extra flavor from a dry rub and no smoke flavor. If you look closely at the picture you’ll see that there is no smoke ring. So what she had seemed more like a decent roast.
I ordered the NC Pork BBQ with Baked Beans and French Fries. The beans were really good. I did like the sauce that they were cooked in. The fries were good but
again, nothing to wow you. I had asked our waitress if they used any seasoning on them and she said yes. I guess she misunderstood me. They were not seasoned.
The pork is where I’m not on board with them. First the meat did not taste fresh. There was no smoke flavor and again if you look closely you’ll see there is no smoke ring. By itself the pork was not very good. I added their vinegar and spice sauce and ate it. The sauce helped.
Final Thoughts:
Based on the pork and brisket I’m just not thrilled with Fat Crabs Rib Company. The seafood might be good but you’ll have to find out for yourself.
It’s not often we run across places we don’t like. Unfortunately we were both let down at Fat Crabs Rib Company. Could it have been an off day? We all have them. I believe the man we talked to when paying our bill added to my negative feeling. There was no remorse. To him the customers were the ones with the problems. That’s just not a good way to talk to another customer. I gave him my card after that and said good night.
Now For Your Thoughts:
In fairness I do welcome your thoughts. Could we have showed up on a bad bbq day? I guess so. Did you have a better experience than we did? I hope you did. Let us know what you think and I’ll post it with this review. Good or bad, I will post your thoughts. Just keep it clean.
I look forward to hearing from you.
