During the week of 11/16/2015 Fritz Pitz BBQ closed their doors. Seems someone is buying them out. Please see note.
This post is a little long but hear me out and check it out. We’ll all be glad you did.
Oh! Now here’s a gem that my wife found. Yes, she gets total credit for finding them.
Fritz Pitz BBQ is located in a shopping center on General Booth Blvd. in Virginia Beach. Whether you live near Virginia Beach or just visiting the beach you really need to go here.
I was thrilled when my wife suggested we go here for our anniversary and try them out. New BBQ restaurant…I’m in. After eating there, just have mercy. It was killer. Not many places will get that response from me on a first visit. I am beyond happy with this one.
Starting with the restaurant itself. It was small but very clean. The owner told us how he hopes to expand, and I hope it works out for him. Both the owner and one employee greeted us when we came in the door. You go to the counter to order your meal and they will bring it to your table for you. I really wish I had asked the young man his name, he was just great. Very friendly, helpful with the menu choices which he’s quick to point out “they’re all good”. He is right.
As for their food. You know we have had some good bbq and some really, really good to great bbq. This has to rank in my top 5 favorites based on my one visit.
I’ll start with my wife’s order. She had the Burnt Ends with Smoked Beans and Smoked Mac & Cheese. The sides rock. I don’t know where he learned to fix those beans like he does but they are worth the trip there. The mac & cheese was good too. But the burnt ends…Have Mercy! If you have ever been to Arthur Bryant’s BBQ in Kansas City you know what burnt ends should taste like. After all, Arthur invented them. Well if you put Fritz Pitz’s beside Arthur Bryant’s you can’t hardly tell them apart. They were PERFECT! You will not get this response from me often. Had the left overs for lunch today and I’m ready to go back. They do run out of these at times but you have got to try them.
OK. Now that I’m calm, somewhat, I’ll tell you about mine. I ordered the Sampler Platter of course. It has Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, and about 4 Ribs. I chose the Meaty Smoked Beans and Fried Okra. The okra was good. Now take the beans that I described above and pile some great pulled pork in there and mix it all up to cook for a while. A slightly larger bowl and they could be a meal by themselves.
But we’re here for the bbq, right? So, I’ll start with the ribs. They came with sauce cooked on them and it was a nice compliment to the meat. It didn’t overpower the taste of the ribs. They were very good but were not my favorite. I am partial to the baby back ribs and these were regular sized ones. But as I said they were very good. I’d get them again in a heartbeat. The Pulled Pork also was very good and earns a spot in my top ten. Probably close to my top five. (I never really ranked them to know who the for real top five is.) I ate mine without sauce but did try a little of their vinegar based, and their original sauces. Both were pretty good but I liked the pork without sauce.
Let’s talk about the Sliced Brisket. There’s a reason I saved it for last. This was some of the best brisket I’ve had in a long time. It had awesome flavor and I never even considered trying a sauce on it. Only problem with it was that I didn’t have any leftover for my lunch today. I couldn’t stop eating it last night until it was gone. Again, I usually don’t go on about a restaurant like I have here but Fritz Pitz is worth me rattling on about. I hope people get the message and go there. I need him to stay in business so I can go back for more.
So I guess you can figure that I like this place just a little. Also, for the food we got the price was not bad. I thought he was very fair.
In closing I also want to mention the extremely friendly atmosphere here. And again the young man that took our order. You could tell that he really loved his job. He even told me how lucky he felt when he got the job. He couldn’t believe he got to work there because they have the “Best BBQ in the world.”
Thanks to Fritz Pitz BBQ and I wish you all the success you can possibly hope for. Keep it real and serve the best bbq you can. Hope to see you soon and I hope that many will read this and go check you out.
