Let me take you along to Haywood Smokehouse in Dillsboro, NC. They’re on Haywood Rd. Dillsboro is located between Franklin and Cherokee, NC. We came in on Hwy. 23/441 from Franklin. We’ve been to this spot several times in the past but this is the first visit since starting the blog. It also happens to be the first time since the current owners took over. They have been running the restaurant for about 4 years now. They have also opened locations in Waynesville and Franklin, NC. But we wanted to go back to the original location that we first visited many years ago while waiting for a scenic train ride.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Haywood Smokehouse has a very nice restaurant with plenty of seating. They also seem to stay pretty busy so be prepared to wait a little for a table. We waited about 10 minutes if that long. So the place was packed when we were there. The dining room has a country/western décor. It’s very comfortable and relaxing even with the crowd. Our waitress was Susie and she was great. She knows the menu and works very hard to keep up with all of her tables. She did an outstanding job waiting on and checking on us frequently. All the staff worked together and managed to keep the dining room clean even with the large amount of people coming and going.
Tammy’s Choices at Haywood Smokehouse:
Tammy had a Smokehouse 2 Meat Platter with Smoked Turkey and Sliced Brisket. For sides she decided on Mac & Cheese and Slaw. The menu says creamy slaw but it’s not soupy. It was a good mayo based slaw. I was expecting too much mayo being creamy but it didn’t have an overload. The mac & cheese was a very good homemade blend. Plenty of cheese and just a great side with her meal. Tammy loved her mac & cheese.
The turkey was wonderful, even for me. Most of you know it really takes some good turkey for me to say that it’s good. But hey, this one had some great smoke flavor. In addition to the smoke, it was moist and tender. The brisket however, was exceptional. It had an awesome bark around the outside along with the smoke flavor and seasoning. All I can say is that the brisket at Haywood Smokehouse is killer. Susie told us that the brisket is their specialty and how right she was.
And For Me:
I also went with a Smokehouse 2 Meat Platter. Mine was with Chopped Pork and Andouille Sausage. My sides were Burnt End Baked Beans and Fries. I also ordered a cup of Brunswick Stew. The fries were wonderful. They were nice and crispy on the outside with some seasoning added to them. The beans were rocking. They had a smoke flavor to them. I don’t know if Haywood Smokehouse smokes them or if they pick up the smoke from the burnt ends. Whatever the case is, they were wonderful. The Brunswick stew is also fantastic. It was full of veggies and chunks of potatoes with plenty of meat and a good tomato base broth.
The Andouille sausage was good. It wasn’t too spicy and had a really good flavor. I tried both mustard sauces that they have and both went well with the sausage. I did like the spicy sauce better than the sweet sauce though. The pork was great. There was lots of bark mixed in
and you could see a good smoke ring. And the pork was moist and tender. The smoke flavor was awesome. I loved the pork.
Final Thoughts:
Haywood Smokehouse is a great stop for Patrick’s BBQ Trail. I believe that they are even better than when we first visited. And those days were good too. The place was very busy yet the staff remained busy and friendly. They treated the customers like they were the only ones in the place. That was an awesome group working in there today. We loved the food. Unfortunately there was no way to fit the fresh peach cobbler in for dessert. Sad to say, it was fresh out the oven and still warm. I know that we will be back. We really enjoyed this stop. Maybe next time I’ll start with the cobbler. Maybe.
