I want to take you on a little ride to visit Hillsborough BBQ Company. They’re located, you guessed it, in Hillsborough, NC on Nash St. We were traveling on I-85 and did a search on the phone for bbq close by and found this one. They’re not far from Interstate 85, off of Highway 86. For travelers it would be a good idea to use your GPS to guide you in like we did. It was not very hard to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Hillsborough BBQ Company is in an older looking row of businesses. This looks like one of the areas that you see in many old towns where they are trying to revitalize the area. The buildings look really nice but you can tell they have been there for a long time. They have withstood the test of time. They have a good sized parking lot across the street.
Along with the work done outside to make the buildings look good, Hillsborough BBQ Company has fixed up the inside to look really nice. I loved the look and the feel of this place. The dining room is pretty good sized and they also have, I believe 4, picnic tables outside.
We were greeted when we came in and told to choose a seat anywhere. Our waiter, Gary, came to welcome us and take our drink orders. Gary was very nice and a good waiter. He kept tabs on us to be sure everything was OK as we had our meal. So far everything was going good.
Tammy’s Choices at Hillsborough BBQ Company:
This evening Tammy ordered a Sliced Turkey Breast Plate with Corn Pudding and Lexington Style Red Slaw. The slaw lived up to the menu description, “Red in color with a little kick”. If you’re not accustomed to Lexington style it will wake your taste buds up. It has a strong vinegar base. It is good if you’re up for that kick. The corn pudding was more traditional old style. Tammy liked it, I didn’t try it.
The smoked turkey breast was excellent. It had a really good smoke flavor and sliced thick. The turkey came out nice and juicy. Tammy loved it.
And My Choices:
I chose the Rib and Pulled Pork Plate with Baked Beans and Lexington Red Slaw for sides. I started with a cup of Brunswick Stew. The Brunswick stew was really good. They say they use chicken, rabbit, pork and
plenty of veggies and potatoes. If the thought of rabbit in your stew scares you, I didn’t really taste anything that screamed “rabbit” in the stew. Everything blended together and made a wonderful stew. The baked beans were wonderful. They had 4 different beans cooked in a really good sauce. I loved them.
The ribs were excellent. Smoked and basted in a sweet bbq sauce. They just fell off the bone and very tasty. The pulled pork at Hillsborough BBQ Company is a whole hog type with light and dark meat mixed together. It has a really good flavor and requires no sauce to enjoy it. The pork is prepared traditional style
and perhaps just a touch of Eastern NC Sauce cooked in it.
Sauces:
I tried out the Sweet Q Sauce. It was good and may have been the same sauce they use on the ribs. The NC Vinegar Sauce was strong on the vinegar. I didn’t want to drown out the meat so I only sampled. You’d have to make your own choices with the sauce. I choose without.
Final Thoughts:
Well I really enjoyed our stop at Hillsborough BBQ Company. Everyone was friendly and the food was really good as well. Again, it’s hard to go wrong with that combination. They have been in business for a long time so they must be doing something right. Especially doing business in a small town. I thought this place was wonderful and would definitely recommend any of you travelers out there to check them out. If traveling I-85, Hillsborough is between Durham and Burlington, NC. I think you’ll be glad you did.
