We’re making a stop at Hot Rod Bar-B-Q today. After a little antiquing in West Monroe we hit the road heading for Texas. So we decided to eat lunch at a reasonable time to avoid having two meals within a few hours of each other. Another search on the ole smart phone and here we go.
Where is Hot Rod Bar-B-Q?
The Hot Rod Bar-B-Q is located just off of Interstate 20 on Farmerville Hwy. in Ruston, LA. They’re a very short distance off the Interstate with easy access off and back on if you’re traveling. Very easy to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Hot Rod Bar-B-Q is a local family owned business. It’s a mid-sized bbq joint having about 15 – 20 tables inside the dining room. We were welcomed when we entered. You come in right at the counter where you place your order. They put your meat order on a plate and give it to you. The sides are cafeteria style, just add the two sides of your choice to your plate then proceed to the register to pay for your meal. You then take your food and have a seat wherever you choose. Everyone was very friendly. There’s really not a lot more I can say about the restaurant and staff. We only had a little interaction with the folks working there, like I said everyone was very friendly. The restaurant was nice and clean, just a good place to sit, relax and have our lunch.
Our Choices at Hot Rod Bar-B-Q:
Today for lunch I chose a 2 Meat Plate with Chopped Pork and Ribs. As I moved down the line I added Baked Beans and Peach Cobbler to my plate for the sides. Yes, one of my sides was my dessert. Adults can do things like that you know. My ribs were very good. They had a good smoke flavor and were really tender. I liked them a lot. The pork also had good smoked flavor. It was pretty good without sauce and even better with sauce.
My baked beans were delicious. They had a good barbeque and meat sauce. Very nice side. And the peach cobbler? Well it was killer. The cobbler/crust part was fantastic and the peaches were excellent. I loved it.
Tammy also got a 2 Meat Plate. Hers was with Chopped Pork and Sliced Brisket. She grabbed some Slaw and also the Peach Cobbler for her sides. Her brisket was very good. It had a nice smokering and smoke flavor. I tried it with and without sauce. It was
really good either way. The slaw was good. It was fine chopped with a sweet mayo base. Her slaw went very well with her plate.
Sauces:
The only sauce I tried was a Sweet BBQ Sauce. It worked really well with the Pork and the Brisket. It just depends on what you like. If you’re a sauce
person, you’ll like this one more than likely.
Final Thoughts:
I believe this was a wonderful little lunch stop. As I already said there is easy access to and from the Interstate. I would have enjoyed talking with some of the employees but everyone was busy doing their work. Everyone treated us well when we were speaking with them or placing our order. I would recommend stopping here and giving Hot Rod Bar-B-Q a shot.

We live in TX but stop at Hot Rods anytime we are traveling through Ruston. We were introduced to Hot Rods years ago at Christmas when family had their Barbeque to go for Christmas lunch. We have tried everything on the menu with no disappointments. My favorite is the loaded potato with pork. Yum;
Thanks for the info. The loaded potato sounds great.
LOVE Hot Rod’s Bar B Q ❤. Been eating there for years!!!! Don’t recall not liking any of the meats cause I have tried them all, but my favorite is the sausage, pulled pork, & ribs ❤ Beans are definitely my favorite & swap out the potato salad & coleslaw on visits. Always add the jalapenos, onions, & pickles. Dr Pepper adds the finishing touch ❤
Sounds like you know the menu pretty well. I appreciate you letting us know about the other selections. Thanks.
Awesome place to eat, best BBQ around, Roy and his wife and staff are great folks!!
Thanks for the comments Brian. We didn’t get to meet many people while we were there. The folks we briefly spoke with were very nice so it’s good to hear from you how great they are. Glad we were able to stop in and thanks again for commenting.
I lived in Ruston until recently and not to be negative but hot rods is a shadow of what it used to be. Just bland meat with absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. The brisket is dry, the pulled pork is awful, and the portions of sides are far smaller than they should be, but I will say the staff was always nice. Please try the Bad Wolf Food truck. It’s the only good BBQ in Ruston.
Jake, I’m sorry to hear this. I also want to apologize for the slow approval and reply to your comment. I’ve been out of commission for a while and now trying to get through 1400 comments, mostly spam. It has been a few years since we traveled down that way. It is always sad to hear when a spot we enjoyed has gone downhill. I’m sure readers will appreciate your input. Thank you.
