We hadn’t been to Jake’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que in Virginia Beach, VA in a while so we decided to go visit them again. I’m really not sure why we haven’t been there, everything is still very good. I guess it’s just the distance. At least that’s the best I can come up with at the moment.
So, with a fresh visit under my belt, no pun intended, here is a little about our visit.
As soon as we came in the front door we were greeted by a hostess and the cashier. Both were very nice and friendly. The hostess took us to our seat and the waitress came to take care of us. She also was very nice and did a great job waiting on us. The waitresses were very busy. I only saw two of them and both were hustling to take care of their tables. Ours went the extra mile to find some Brunswick Stew for me when they thought the restaurant was out of it. The dining room was clean. The only problem I saw with the dining room was the shortage of waitresses so they tried to seat people close together to help the waitresses out. Good thinking on their part and effective too. The down side for us was more noise from everyone being close. This is probably my only negative about Jake’s for this visit.
As mentioned, I started with the Brunswick Stew. It was good. Theirs is not my favorite but it is good and I haven’t had any good stew in a while.
For my dinner I ordered the Pulled Pork and Smoked Sausage combo with fried okra and fresh cut fries. It was wonderful. The pork had a nice smoke flavor and a good smoke ring visible in the meat. I didn’t use any sauce on it tonight. It was really good. The Sausage was a little spicy but very good as long as you like the heat. Don’t get it if you’re looking for a mild sausage, but it will not hurt you either. I really liked it. The Sausage also came with a light glaze on it which was good. However, I would have liked a mustard based sauce for it instead. (This is not a negative, just a preference of mine)
Tammy ordered the Pulled Pork and Brisket combo with slaw and onion rings. The slaw was good but I didn’t really care for the onion rings. The Brisket also had good smoke flavoring and a nice smoke ring. It too was very good without any sauce on it.
Well, while we were there we joined their rewards club so we will be back. Jake’s is a nice place at the beach to go for a good sit down dinner away from the oceanfront. It’s just a short ride from the oceanfront on General Booth Blvd. and worth it. Give them a try and see how your visit turns out.
If you like them let me know.
