Today we’re going to talk about Jones’ Restaurant in Portsmouth. Though they don’t call themselves an outright bbq restaurant, they do have a pig on their cover and bbq is on the menu. They also use Jones Barbecue for their web address. Well we decided to give them a shot and see what they have. Let’s go with it.
Where Is Jones’ Restaurant?
Jones’ Restaurant is located in the Churchland area of Portsmouth, VA. They are at the intersection of West Norfolk Rd. and Tyre Neck Rd. in a shopping center. There is also a Planet Fitness located there.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Jones’ Restaurant has a pretty good size dining room. It could use a little updating and sprucing up. The staff that we talked to were all very nice and truly seemed happy to have you there. Based on my writing style you’re probably sensing a “but” in the making. Well to those regular readers…you’re right. Sorry guys.
What We Ate at Jones’ Restaurant:
On this night at Jones’ Restaurant I ordered their Large BBQ Plate with Fried Okra and Brunswick Stew. Here we go. Their bbq is minced, not my favorite style but I can accept it, with a slight vinegar taste. Sort of your typical NC Style Q. That’s what they call it. I’m sorry to have to say that it didn’t live up to the name for me. It tasted like it was old and not fresh to me. I’d almost have to compare it to bbq you can get at a grocery store in a tub. The Brunswick Stew was not my favorite either. It had a lot of corn and not much meat in it. I will say on the bright side that the okra was good.
Tammy was not as brave so she ordered the BBQ and Fried Chicken Combo. So on to the chicken. It was good. She also had Brunswick Stew which she gave to me. In addition, she ordered Lima Beans. They were ok but could use a little more seasoning.
They also bring you coleslaw and offer two types. Tammy tried the mustard based which was a little too spicy. Maybe you have to have a taste for it. I had the mayo based which was pretty good. It also had a hint of sweet to it.
Our highlight food wise: The hushpuppies. They were awesome. Large and crunchy on the outside and tender bread on the inside. Excellent.
Final Thoughts:
I have to say that when we went to Jones’ Restaurant they were celebrating their 30th Anniversary. That said they must be doing something right. I think as a “Family Restaurant” they probably would do ok. I just cannot recommend them as a bbq restaurant. They do offer many other entrees, such as chicken and seafood.
What You Think About Jones’ Restaurant:
So now you know how I feel, let’s hear your thoughts. I’m sure if the local crowd pipes in I’ll receive all sorts of comments. That’s great. Again, keep it kid friendly and I’ll post them with my article. I really expect others out there to disagree with me and that’s fine.
