Well, if you’re going to call your bbq famous it should really be better than good, right? And I do believe that King’s Famous BBQ in Petersburg does fit the bill.

I believe that once in my life I ordered some type of combo plate and I don’t even remember it. All I can eat now is their smoked pork bbq. Remember that I usually like pulled or sometimes chopped. King’s offers sliced or chopped. I’ve never to my knowledge eaten the chopped. We do go here frequently in case you haven’t guessed by now.

Before going on, I recently ordered their beef plate and it was pretty good but not worth giving up the pork for. It’s not brisket so it doesn’t compete for my affections for their pork.

Here’s the deal at King’s. Our favorite waitress introduced us to this one.

Kings Famous BBQ – Sliced Pork Half & Half

You have to order the pork platter and ask for sliced “half & half”. This is not sliced like off of a meat slicer used in a deli. This sliced is hand cut probably about 3/8” thick or better and it comes out more like a chopped or pulled plate.

As for the half and half, you may ask what that is. Well you’ll get half like burnt ends and the other half regular. This is awesome! Great smoke flavor and the “burnt” part is to die for. They have their own sauce. It’s kind of a vinegar/mustard flavor, not a strong mustard like South Carolina or Georgia. Be open minded and try it. I like a good NC vinegar sauce but I really enjoy King’s sauce.

Kings Famous BBQ – Homemade Onion Rings

You also need to start out with an order of onion rings for an appetizer. They are hand cut and breaded. You will not be sorry on this choice.

As far as the sides go you really need to ask the waitress or waiter. Many are homemade, all are good.

Something this good has to have a drawback, right? Well they do not serve Brunswick Stew or Ribs. There you go.

This is one of our favorite places to go for bbq. Even though they’re about 45 – 50 minutes away we will still hit the road for dinner some nights.

They have a friendly casual dining room. Everyone there treats you like you’re one of their regulars, they definitely want you to come back. I think you will.
