While on a recent trip to the mountains we decided to stop for a late lunch at Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ. We both had read reviews on line about them and wanted to see for ourselves just how good they were or were not. So not to beat around the bush, here’s our take on them.
Where Is Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ?
Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ is located just off the main highway going thru Mount Airy, Hwy. 52 also known as Andy Griffith Pkwy. They’re right across from the Mayberry Mall and actually on Frederick St. Pretty easy to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
They have a pretty good sized dining room with both tables and booths. The décor was casual and very relaxed. Everyone that we had contact with was very nice and willing to help with any needs you may have. They are just small town nice. I really love going to these type places where the people are so friendly and welcoming.
What We Ate at Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ:
For this lunch I chose the 2 meat combo with chopped pork and smoked sausage. For sides I had fried potatoes and fried okra. The plate was served with hushpuppy balls. Yes that’s right, balls.
So starting with my least favorite of my selections, we have the smoked sausage. It was good but just not outstanding. The chopped pork on the other hand was really good. It had a nice smoke ring and smoke flavor. I especially enjoyed it with their Lexington sauce. As much as I’ve wanted to go to Lexington, NC for their style of bbq we have not made it there yet. So this was my first experience with Lexington style. I was delighted with the sauce and now I really want to go to Lexington.
So, back to the food at Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ. The fried potatoes were good but could have been better. They were sliced a little thicker than a potato chip which would have been good. It seemed like they may have sat under a heat lamp while the rest of the order was put together and they ended up not as hot as they could have been. That took a little away from them for us. The okra was good and it was hotter than the potatoes.
Lastly for me comes the hushpuppy balls. They were wonderful. Not to mention this is a great idea. These balls are not like round puppies, they are very small almost marble sized balls. Very unique and creative. We loved them.
Tammy ordered the sliced brisket plate with fried potatoes and bbq beans. Hers also came with the hushpuppy balls. The brisket was very good. It was sliced a little thicker than a lot of places and seemed like it was heated up on the grill with sauce added to it. I thought it was really good. The bbq beans had good flavor and seasoning. They are a good choice for a side.
Final Thoughts:
So here’s my final take on Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ. I really liked them. For a second visit I’d order the chunk pork and sliced brisket. For sides I’d go with the bbq beans and okra or something other than the okra if I wanted to try something different. I think this would make an excellent choice.
Yes I think this is a pretty good stop and would recommend Little Richard’s Lexington BBQ to anyone visiting Mount Airy, NC.
