Let’s take a ride out to the mountains and visit Log Cabin Barbecue in Elkton, VA. Now some may consider this more the foothills but to someone from the east coast flatlands they sure look like mountains to me. Either way I will say this is a beautiful area of Virginia. We love it here. So for any who may not know, Elkton is just east of Harrisonburg, VA and I-81, north of I-64. I believe we made our way from 81 to Highway 340 and enjoyed some of the scenic views in the area. We had a great ride through some of the farmlands up there.
One last note about the location. They are located right at the Massanutten Resort.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Log Cabin Barbecue is located in exactly what they say, a log cabin. This is a pretty cool place for any history buffs out there. The kitchen area of the restaurant is actually in a log cabin which is over 200 years old. The dining area is built around the outside of the log cabin so the interior walls in the dinning room are the logs that built the cabin. To try to think of the cabin as having a wrap around porch that is closed in. So, you are inside. The dinning room is not large. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes for a table. Not bad at all.
We watched while we waited and saw that Log Cabin Barbecue was doing a large amount of take out orders. We talked to a few of the people while they waited for their orders. Some have only had the pork bbq but said that they loved it. Another said that Log Cabin Barbecue had catered their wedding 4 years earlier and they’ve been coming there ever since. It was refreshing talking to some of their customers while we waited. Now we were looking forward to trying them out even more.
After being seated our waitress came to greet us and get our drink orders. She was just super friendly. Once we were ready to place our order she helped us out with all our questions so we could work our meal out to try everything. She came back often to check on us and was just very pleasant during our whole visit.
Unfortunately we didn’t write her name down. The other young lady waiting tables appeared to be the same way. Everyone there was very nice.
Our Choices at Log Cabin Barbecue:
Tonight Tammy chose the Smoked Sausage with Mac & Cheese and Hushpuppies. The mac & cheese was nice and creamy and pretty good. Her hushpuppies were also good. The sausage comes smothered with bbq. They serve two types of bbq at Log Cabin Barbecue. Tammy went with their original which is in a sweet sauce. The Q was good but had a little too much sauce for me. The sausage was different than any I’ve had before. There was a flavor I’m not familiar with. It was good but not my favorite.
I decided on their Sampler Plate. It has ¼ Slab of Ribs and Pulled Pork BBQ. I chose the NC Style. For sides I went with Potato Salad and Baked Beans. The potato salad was very good. It’s made with red skin potatoes and had a good southern style taste. The beans had a wonderful sauce with what looked like their pulled pork mixed in.
The NC pulled pork had plenty of smoke and vinegar taste. At first it was too strong but got better to me as I ate it. It was just more vinegar than I’d prefer. Still it was very good. The ribs were smoked and served with no sauce, just how I like
them. They fell off the bone. The ribs were tender and meaty and were my favorite of the night.
We also ordered a Beef BBQ Sandwich without the bun so we could share it. This is pulled beef which is also served in their sweet bbq sauce. It was pretty good but again, I’d prefer less sauce.
Sauces:
Since the meats, except the ribs, already has sauce cooked in them I did not try any additional sauces. I don’t think you need to add any to the food. And as I have already said I’d prefer less sauce cooked in and people can add them at the table if that’s their preference. The sauces themselves were pretty good though depending on which style you like.
Desserts:
Tammy ordered some Peach Ice Cream for dessert. It was wonderful. The ice cream is made locally and it had nice chunks of peaches in it.
I had Apple Pie with Ice Cream which was also local made and wonderful. I don’t see you going wrong with either choice.
Final Thoughts:
All in all we really enjoyed our visit to Log Cabin Barbecue. We had some good food and met some great people. We felt very welcomed here too. There was just a nice feel to the whole visit, from the wait and talking to other customers through the whole dinner. I loved the log cabin and the décor. I’m glad we found them and were able to pay them a visit. No complaints and I think a good stop along the BBQ Trail.
