A couple of months ago Tammy and I noticed a sign for Red Pig BBQ in Williamsburg, VA that read Opening Soon. Since we ride across the Jamestown Ferry when we go to Williamsburg, we kept an eye on it to see when they were going to open. Well the day finally arrived and we found out they had opened up. When we visited they had been opened for only two weeks. So here’s a brand new restaurant to check out. Let’s see how it went.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Red Pig BBQ is located on Jamestown Rd. in Williamsburg. If you go the way we did you just come off the ferry and go straight. They’re about a half mile after the ferry and Jamestown area. Like I said, they had only been opened for about two weeks when we went. Everything was new looking and fresh. They really did a nice job fixing the place up before opening. The young man that waited on us was very friendly and helped us out a lot. He seemed genuinely happy that we were there. We did show up in the middle of the afternoon between lunch and dinner. After we were eating our meals the owner came out to talk with us. He was very modest and nice also. He truly wanted to know how we liked our meals and talked openly about his experiences. Come to find out he used to work in our backyard near Franklin, VA. So the restaurant and staff get thumbs up for friendly service and a fresh clean dining room.
Our Choices at Red Pig BBQ:
Tammy ordered the Brisket Dinner with Baked Beans and French Fries. The meal comes with cornbread. The cornbread was wonderful. It was light and fluffy and great tasting. The baked beans were good. They were served cold which is fine with me but Tammy prefers them warm. Either way the flavor was there and very good. The fries were wonderful. They were fresh-cut style and great with the meals. The Brisket at Red Pig BBQ had a really good flavor. It had some smokering but not an overpowering smoke flavor. The brisket comes pulled like the pork. It’s served with a red bbq sauce on the side which was very good with it also.
I chose the Ribs with Potato Salad and Baked Beans. I also tried a sample of their Pulled Pork. The potato salad was pretty good. I thought it was a good choice to go with my meal. I might would go with the fries
next time even though I liked the potato salad. The pork was pretty good. Not a lot of smoke flavor but it had a pretty good taste to it. The ribs had a great flavor to them. They were a little dry but they tasted great. We talked to the owner about the ribs. He is still trying different ways to cook them to try to make them better and not dry them out. I give him a lot of credit for trying and for being willing to talk about it. I think he will get it down. Remember, this is a new restaurant. The sauce on the side went really well with the pork also.
We also tried a piece of Pecan Pie for dessert. It was really good. I’d get that again also.
Final Thoughts:
So here’s my final take on Red Pig BBQ. We did enjoy our visit and there are admittedly some areas for improvements. The owner was a wonderful man who seems to want to serve the best food he can to his customers. He truly seems to want you to be satisfied when you eat there. I give him a lot of credit for that. Is there better bbq out there? Of course there is. I believe we have visited some of the best there is out there. How far do you want to travel for it? Is there anyone willing to work harder to be sure you are satisfied with your meal? Maybe. I know we were very pleased with our visit. I think they will work hard to be sure you are pleased too. I truly hope that Red Pig BBQ gets their bugs worked out and can pump out some consistently wonderful bbq on a daily basis. I’d give them a try and give them a chance. I’m hoping they make it in this though market.
