We’ve had a few recommendations to go to Saucy’s Bar-B-Q in Petersburg, VA. So we finally made it out there to check them out for lunch one Saturday. The sit-down restaurant has only been open about a year but the walk-up has been there much longer. They actually share the same parking lot. This turned into a pretty good stop.
Where is Saucy’s Bar-B-Q?
Saucy’s Bar-B-Q is in Petersburg, VA near the historic downtown area. Their address is listed as 257 E. Bank St. but that is the back of the restaurant. They have pretty easy access off of I-95 North at exit 52. At the end of the ramp you need to take a left onto E. Bank St. By the way the road is not marked at the end of the ramp, just take the left. Once you go under the interstate you’re almost there. They are at the corner of 5th and Bollingbrook Streets. If you’re not familiar with the area and want to use your GPS you can use the location for Saucy’s Walk Up. It’s not too hard to find. I only passed it once. The second time I saw the smoker in the back and turned into the parking lot.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The restaurant is very clean. They have done a great job renovating an old building to make a really nice little restaurant. They have tables inside and outside. There is also a fire pit with the outside tables which our waiter told us was soon to be used for cooking meats. The staff at Saucy’s Bar-B-Q was very nice. You come in and pick a table and someone will wait on you. Our waiter was very good. He had a good knowledge of the menu and was able to help us with our choices. Even when they picked up a few larger groups everyone chipped in to help keep things running smoothly. They were all quite friendly.
What We Ate at Saucy’s Bar-B-Q:
Since we were eating lunch I thought I’d go a little lighter. I ordered the Pork Sandwich with slaw and hot sauce. For my side I chose the French Fries. The pork was very good. It had a nice smoke flavor and great smoke rings. I even liked the slaw which is an accomplishment for me. Slaw is not usually my favorite. Our waiter said that this sandwich is really good with the hot sauce on it so I went for it. He was 100% right on with that call. Don’t let that scare you away, it’s not that hot. The hot sauce just gives the sandwich a little more flavor. And let me just say that the fries were fantastic. They season them with their rib rub. I’m a fan.
Tammy ordered the Beef Sandwich with Slaw but no to the hot sauce. The beef is smoked brisket cut into chunks sort of like cubes. It was very good also. The brisket was moist
and tender and had some really good smoke flavor to it. She had the fries also. Speaking of the French Fries with the rib rub on them. They were so good that I had to order a 1/3 Rack of Ribs to go with my sandwich. So much for a little lighter. The rub on the ribs along with the smoke worked very well for them. They were large and meaty, just plain good. I ordered mine without sauce. But our waiter once again came thru for us and suggested getting the sauce on the side to use for dipping the fries. This dude was so right again.
