Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q Colonial Heights, VA

We took a little ride to try out Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q at The Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum in Colonial Heights, VA. They are a branch off of

Sibley’s BBQ in Chester, VA whom I’ve already reviewed. I’ll stick with using Sibley & Son for this review to keep them separate, plus this is the name on the business card that was given to me.

I’ll give you a little history with this post. One of our readers e-mailed me to suggest the Sibley’s location at the Tractor Museum. Well since I had already been to the other location I wasn’t in a big hurry to go to this one. Well procrastination set in and after a while I received another e-mail inquiring as to whether we had went here or not. Ok, so now I feel a little pressure. I love recommendations from readers and didn’t want him to give up on me. Many thanks for the patience and the second e-mail to get me moving. We made our plans to check them out and here’s how it went.

Where is Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q Located?

View from our table at Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q.

So as mentioned, Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q is located in Colonial Heights, VA. They are in the Tractor Museum right off I-95. For any who may not know the area, this is just outside of Petersburg, VA. We got off of I-95 North at Exit 53. Made a left at the end of the ramp to go under the Interstate then a right. Be careful in this area. If you’re coming from North 95 like we did you’ll come to a stop sign. This intersection was a little hairy, the exit ramp from South 95 dumps right onto this road. No big deal, just be careful. The restaurant is located in the same building as the museum.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q Dining Room.

When you enter the building Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q will be to your left. The Truck and Tractor Museum is straight ahead. The first thing we noticed was the décor in the restaurant. To me it was set up like an old soda shop / burger joint type place. It seemed to have come from the 1950’s. I loved it. Everything was spotless. The dining room was fair sized and they have additional seating for groups in a separate room. We chose a table by the windows so I could look in at the old tractors while we sat there. I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed looking at them all.

So along came our waitress, Sheila. She was awesome, making us feel right at home and like we were regulars. Sheila was also a great help when it came to the menu. She knew it very well. I can’t say enough about the way she made us feel comfortable and welcomed. Very nice. And just in case you’re wondering, everyone else we met was just as friendly.

Our Choices at Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q:

Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q

Brisket Quesadilla with side of Corn Fritters.

Now let’s talk about the food. Tammy ordered one of their specials, a Brisket Quesadilla. She had an order of Corn Fritters to go with it. The brisket had a very good flavor. It blended very well with the other ingredients in her quesadilla. Her corn fritters were excellent as well. Tammy was very pleased with her choices.

Pulled Pork Platter with Fried Okra and Baked Beans.

I ordered the Pulled Pork Platter with Fried Okra and Baked Beans. It came with Hushpuppies. The pulled pork was really good. It is pulled in long “string like” pieces of meat. It was served lightly sauced and had a good flavor. The sauce and the meat went together very well. My okra was wonderful. Nothing fancy, no extra flavoring, just fried okra. I know this may sound a little strange but it was fried perfectly. The crust was golden brown and just right. Yes, my beans were good too. Out of everything the beans could probably use a little work to spruce them up some. They were not bad and they went well with the meal. I guess I’m getting use to more doctored up baked beans now.

I guess if I had a complaint it would be that there are no combination plates. I like to try as many different meats as possible when I go to a new restaurant. Maybe somewhere down the line they could add a couple of different combo platters.

The Sauces:

There were two different sauces on our table so I tried each of them with my pork. The first was a Red-Sweet Sauce. This was your basic tomato base BBQ sauce. It was something like a Kansas City Sweet Sauce. Good but not what I want on my pork. I know, some people do like it that way. Tammy also liked this sauce on her brisket. The second sauce was a NC Vinegar Sauce. Now this one was very good with the pork. I guess it’s just more my style.

And For Dessert:

Peach and Apple Cobblers with Ice Cream.

Yes we had to try out the desserts at Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q. Tammy went for the Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream. It was very good. I chose the Apple Cobbler with Ice Cream. I thought mine was even better. So both of us finished off our cobblers thinking that the one we had was the best. OK, we’ll just have to go back for more. Maybe I’ll get one of each so I can really study them. The sacrifices I make for my readers.

Final Thoughts:

Thanks to a little persistence from a reader we found a really good stop for the BBQ Trail. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and talking with our waitress. I loved looking through the windows at the old tractors. Bad thing is that the Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum closes earlier than Sibley & Son Bar-B-Q so I didn’t get to go into the museum.

We met with the manager after we ate. I believe her name is Rita. She was fantastic also, even though she made us go to the office. Felt like I was in high school again. Well everything turned out good. We were not in trouble. We sat in there and talked with Rita a little while, explaining what we do and letting her know that we had enjoyed our meals. We really enjoyed talking with her.

Everyone there was friendly. I look forward to return visits. I want a full order of brisket and also to check out the rest of their menu.

And finally, just for Sheila, I even loved that second glass of tea you brought out for Tammy. I hope you’re smiling because I am. You were awesome. Thanks for the great service.

Great Article ! I have eaten there on numerous occasions and have tried several selections. I also love the pulled pork and the vinegar sauce. The French fries are yummy, the okra, the slaw, the corn fritters ! I have enjoyed a wonderful hamburger. The balogna burger is top shelf ! You need to try the chef salad, one of my favorites. As for dessert, mshe blackberry cobbler with ice cream is my favorite. The decor is awesome, the scenery is fun. A very unique combination. My suggestion is go to lunch, then the museum to walk it off. Or save dessert until after your museum tour !

Have been a regular at the oringinal Sibleys since they started thier business. Good food, fair price nice staff. When in the Colonial Heights area have visited Sibley and Son. WON’T BE GOING BACK! On three separate occassions the restaurant has been closed during thier regular posted hours. Tonight was the final straw. I had checked the Keystone website for Sibley’s hours. 8:00 pm. It was 7:00 pm. DOORS LOCKED. Open sign on. We knocked on the door and a waitress said they were closing as business was slow. She did not offer for us to come in. This is how they operate. Too loosey goosey with the hours. Not dependable. Left and went back to Sibleys in Chester. They o perate according to posted hours. Novel concept.

We really had a good time here. The food was wonderful. We didn’t get to go thru the museum. It was getting late and I needed to get back to Suffolk. One day we’ll go early on a Saturday so we can check it out.
