As we continue heading west we stumbled across Smokehouse of Florence. We had done a Google search about 20 miles before we got there and decided that they would be our lunch stop for the day. We were traveling north to get some distance between us and the coast. I guess if the truth be known we were also heading for Leland, MS to visit the Birth Place of Kermit the Frog. So I bet you got a smile on your face now, I’ll just continue on with the review.
One last thing before I go on. In case you haven’t noticed over the last several reviews there is now a red Jeep in our lives. No I did not get rid of Brrezy, my blue one. So when you see the red one in the pictures at the restaurants this is why. The red Jeep is Ryder and is Tammy’s and we decided to take Ryder on this road trip due to the distance we’d travel and the amount of packing required. He is a 4 door Wrangler. Much more room than my 2 door. Well here we go.
Where is Smokehouse of Florence?
Smokehouse of Florence is located where else, Florence, MS. They are right off of Highway 49 in a little strip mall. They have a nice corner location. Looking at a map now I see that they are not too far from Jackson, MS.
The Restaurant and Staff:
As I said Smokehouse of Florence has a corner location in a strip of offices and other businesses. Nice location. We were 1500 miles from home and found them with no problem. When we entered Tammy fell in love immediately. Up by the register was a display with Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoe Boxes. She was sure this would be our best stop ever. The dining room was in an “L” shape with Western décor. The place was very clean and well taken care of. I loved the décor.
We were greeted when we came in and told we could choose a seat. This one is a sit down order from a menu restaurant. Nice. Our waitress was Brandi and she was very good. She took excellent care of us and was just super friendly. She came back to check on us frequently during our whole visit.
Our Choices at Smokehouse of Florence:
Now on to our choices. I went with the Smokehouse Combo “Hungry Plate”. It comes with choice of 2 meats, mine being Pulled Pork and Ribs. For sides I went with Fried Okra and Baked Beans. Mexican Cornbread also came with it. The pork was excellent. Nice smokering, good smoke flavor and bark mixed in. If you look closely at the picture you can also see that it was nice and moist. The ribs were awesome. You can order them wet or dry. I went with dry. They had a great smoke flavor and just fell off the bone. I didn’t dare add sauce to them. These ribs just melted in your mouth.
My Fried Okra was incredible. It had a very light and flakey coating, fried to perfection. As much as I love okra, this was tops. Then there were the Baked Beans. They were also outstanding. They were cooked in a nice thick sauce with great flavor. The Mexican Cornbread was also good. It had kernels of corn in it as well as some green chilies. Not spicy even though I had expected it to be.
Tammy ordered the Brisket Plate with Butter Beans and Mac and Cheese. The Brisket was sliced thick and had a pretty good smokering. It had a very good flavor. I tried it out with and without their sweet bbq sauce. It was great both ways.
Her Mac & Cheese was excellent, cheesy and moist. It was a wonderful side dish. The Butter Beans were seasoned very well. If the okra hadn’t been so good I’d have wished I ordered the butter beans too.
Sauces:
The only sauce I tried was their Sweet BBQ Sauce. It was a sweet tomato base sauce. The sauce had a very good flavor, only problem, nothing needed sauce on it.
Desserts:
Well to top things off Tammy ordered Chocolate Cake. Which I ended up having to finish for her. This was a very rich dark chocolate cake that would have been to die for with vanilla ice cream. Without the ice cream we only reached critical condition. Tammy loved it, I still prefer milk chocolate. One piece of this cake is seriously large enough for two people to enjoy.
Final Thoughts:
I think you can tell that we really enjoyed our stop at Smokehouse of Florence. The waitresses were very nice and even the other customers were friendly to us. This place is a definite must stop if you’re ever close by. Only problem…again, why lunch. Back on the road we go with miserable stomachs. What sweet pain it is though.
Now For Your Thoughts:
Here’s the part where I ask how many others have been here. Was your visit as good as ours? What did you order? Please just feel free to tell us about your visit.
