Smokey Bones just seems to fit the bill. OK so it’s also a chain. And yes, it can also double as a sports bar. So you need to hit them up at the right time. Want a rowdy, noisy meal, go during a major sporting event. It doesn’t matter which sport. You want more subdued, choose your time to visit wisely. I’ve never been there when anyone got out of hand. Some people just want to have more fun than others. Be sure to plan you visit.
Where Is Smokey Bones?
For the sake of this review I’ll stick with the location in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake.
This Smokey Bones is located at 1405 Greenbrier Parkway in Chesapeake, VA. They are right outside of Greenbrier Mall. They have easy access off and back onto Interstate 64 making them pretty convenient for anyone traveling to and from Virginia Beach.
The Restaurant and Staff:
As I said, Smokey Bones doubles as a sports bar. The area around the bar is set up just that way. They have several TV’s above the bar and some high top tables in that area. Away from that area are regular booths and tables. They have plenty of seating and frequently fill up on weekend nights. The wait is usually not too long.
The staff is usually very friendly and helpful. Only once did we have a waitress that wasn’t. I guess everyone can have a bad day.
What We Ate at Smokey Bones:
On a normal visit I will get the Pulled Pork or the Baby Back Ribs. I usually stick with the fries and baked
beans for my sides. Their pork has a pretty good smoke flavor and most of the time I eat it without any sauce. My favorite here are the Baby Back Ribs. I really like them with the Memphis Dry Rub. They serve them several different ways, just pick your favorite style. Their menu will describe the differences between the styles. Hard to go wrong there. To me the ribs have a lot more flavor than the pork. They also offer St. Louis Style Ribs if you prefer the larger ribs. I also tried their Smoked Spiced Sausage once. It was a little spicy for those of you that don’t like the heat. I haven’t tried it again simply because of my rib fetish.
Tammy usually sticks with the pork with slaw and some type of corn. She enjoys both of these sides. She did try the brisket once and was disappointed with it. I tried it when she ordered it and didn’t like it either. They say that they have a different recipe now but neither of us have tried it again. She has also had the Sliced Smoked Chicken Breast. It did have a decent smoke flavor. She did like it but she still sticks with the pulled pork.
I also love Smokey Bones’ Brunswick Stew. It also has a little kick to it so if you don’t like food that’s a little spicy, don’t get it. If you like some spice give that a try too.
Final Thoughts:
Well my final thoughts on Smokey Bones would be that even though they are a chain they are worth trying. They have a good variety on the menu so it’s easy to find something you’ll like. Yes I normally lean towards the small family run restaurants but these guys seem to know what they are doing. The staff usually goes out of their way to make you feel welcome.
