Today we made a trip up Virginia’s Eastern Shore to visit Smokey’s BBQ & Grill in Chincoteague. After traveling up Highway 13 and doing a little antiquing we hit a back road somewhere along the line. My GPS took us off the beaten path and we just went with it. This was a cool ride and we went to areas that I’ve never seen before. You still end up right in the middle of Chincoteague when all is said and done. I’ve never really thought of this as a bbq area but looking at it from a vacationing point I guess you can’t eat seafood all the time. So there is a little variety there.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Smokey’s BBQ & Grill doesn’t actually have a restaurant. They are more of a food trailer set up in a permanent location. They do have some high top tables and some picnic tables you can eat at. When we walked up to the counter the young lady working was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I don’t have her name. They weren’t very busy but this was the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend. I would expect the crowds to be coming in then with the beginning of tourist season here at the East Coast Beach areas.
So once we placed our orders Tammy went and picked out a table for us and I went to get our drinks and some sauces, napkins, etc. Once everything was set up I went to wait on our food.
Our Choices at Smokey’s BBQ & Grill:
Today we were checking out their Sampler Platter. At the counter we were told that this plater is enough for two to share. So we decided to do just that. The sampler platter comes with Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket and Pit Beef. We chose Slaw and Baked Beans for our sides. The slaw was good, shredded cabbage not too thin or small with a nice mayo base mixture. The beans were wonderful. They just had a really good flavor to them.
The pork at Smokey’s BBQ & Grill is pretty good too. They did have more sauce on it than I’d prefer. It seems like the smoked pork would have a good stand-alone flavor and people could add sauce if desired. But that’s my preference. The brisket had a good smoke ring and some good smoke flavor. It was sliced pretty thin like off of a meat slicer. Then there is the pit beef which was awesome. This was like a medium rare roast beef that had been smoked. It had a great flavor and was my hands down favorite of the three meat choices.
Sauces:
I did get a couple of their sauces to try but didn’t get to them. Since the bbq already had sauce and that’s what I usually sample the sauces on.
Final Thoughts:
Ok so this one is a little tough. I think about the area they are in and don’t think of bbq. Yet there they are in the middle of town pushing it out. And they were pretty good. I do believe it would be tougher for them if they were in an area with a lot of competition but the pit beef would pull in a lot of support. Bottom line would be if you go to Chincoteague you should give them a try. If you’re hungry do not order the sampler platter to share with someone. I will give Smokey’s BBQ & Grill credit for serving bbq in the middle of a seafood town. I hope they do well.
