The second half of our Saturday bbq run finds us at Smokey’s BBQ Shack in Morrisville, NC. One of our readers told me that we needed to check this place out. So after spending several hours walking around Granddaddy’s Antique Mall in Burlington we decided to head back east to hunt down supper. We actually road in from Burlington on Highway 54 so we could take in the scenic route. That was a very nice ride and Hwy. 54 turns into Chapel Hill Rd. which is the road Smokey’s is located on. Looking at a map I see that we were just off Hwy. 540 also. Somehow after eating we worked our way over to Hwy. 64 and took it to I-95 to get back to VA. We really had a wonderful daytrip topped off with supper at Smokey’s BBQ Shack. Here’s how it went.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Smokey’s BBQ Shack has a really cool restaurant. They’re in an old diner. Dirt and gravel parking lot on the side of a busy highway. I loved it from the start. When we went in there were tables in the front of the building as well in the back section. You have to go to the back to order at the counter. After placing your order you pick out a seat and wait until your number is called.
The inside of the dining rooms were not fancy. Just simple tables to eat at. The walls were decorated with old signs with various sayings on them. I heard someone say they also had tables out back you could eat at. So right now I’m really into this place. This is the kind of restaurant I love to find. A nice hard working family in a simple no frills building trying to make a living and feed the masses. I’m open for all the suggestions that I can get like this one.
I’m not sure if the young man at the counter was new but he didn’t seem to be very engaging with the customers. Maybe it was late and he was getting tired. Don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t rude or anything like that, just not outwardly friendly. Smokey and a young boy who may have been Smokey’s son were awesome and very friendly. I loved the young one, maybe 5 or 6 years old. Sorry we could only talk to Smokey briefly. They became super busy after we arrived and it was nearing closing time. Now I’m just hoping that the food is as good. So by all means, read on.
Tammy’s Choices at Smokey’s BBQ Shack:
For dinner Tammy ordered the Sliced Brisket Platter with Slaw and Mac & Cheese. The platters also come with hushpuppies. I’ll start there. The puppies were not homemade but were very good with the meals. Her mac & cheese was delicious and super cheesy. Smokey’s BBQ Shack serves up some tasty homemade slaw. Tammy really enjoyed the slaw. The brisket was excellent too. It had a really nice smoke ring and good smoke flavor blended in as well as being tender and tasty. She was a happy camper tonight.
My Choices at Smokey’s BBQ Shack:
I ordered two meats. Here’s how it works. I chose the Pulled Pork Platter with Fresh Cut Fries and BBQ Beans. I also added a side of Brunswick Stew. So when you choose your second, or third for that matter, you get what you pay for. I ordered Ribs for my second choice. You pay by the bone. This seemed odd at first but it really worked out well. You only get the amount you want. With the other meats you just pay by the ounce for what you want. Hopefully that’s clear enough. It’s not too hard. You can just order what you want and at the end they tell you how much you owe. Fair enough for me.
Here’s my take on dinner. The fries were killer. I loved them. They were just fresh cut potatoes fried and salted. The bbq beans were also a hit. There were 4 – 5 different beans in there. Kidney beans, black beans, lima beans, and maybe a couple more. These were cooked up in a fantastic sauce. They were different from the norm and excellent. The Brunswick Stew was worth the trip in itself. I was going to pick up a quart to take home but as busy as they were I just forgot to get it when we finished eating. This stew is wonderful.
As I said, pulled pork and ribs were my meat choices. The pork was excellent. It had a good smoke ring, bark around the outside and a really good smoke flavor. The ribs were also wonderful. They had a really good smoke flavor and were finished off with some nice charring on the outside. Very nice job here. Only drawback was I only ordered 3 ribs to go with my pork.
Final Thoughts:
So here’s what I think. I was loving Smokey’s BBQ Shack from the time I first laid eyes on the outside. Things just got better from there. I was able to talk to Smokey briefly after eating but they were very busy so he couldn’t stay out of the kitchen long. He was very gracious and thankful for all the business. You could tell he wanted to talk more but couldn’t. I told him he better get back to the kitchen before Mrs. Smokey came to get him. He thanked me again and went back to work.
This is indeed a hard working family and doing a great job at it. I wish them well and hope for a return trip when we can talk a little more. This is a spot you need to hunt down and check out. And if you’re coming back to Virginia, bring me a quart of that Brunswick Stew. Just kidding, I’ll be back.
