Tammy and I decided to check out SoDoSoPa Spirited Cuisine a few weeks ago when doing some Christmas shopping at the Outlet Stores in Smithfield, NC. Once we wrapped up the shopping we were
ready to sit and relax with a nice meal. We were both searching our phones and Tammy found this place in the downtown area. So off we went to find the corner of E. Johnston St. and S. 3rd St. They’re not very far from the shops and fairly easy to find if you are visiting the area.
As for their name, you’ll have to stop in and ask them about it. There is a story about it.
The Restaurant and Staff:
SoDoSoPa Spirited Cuisine is in old downtown Smithfield, NC. It really looks like a nice area to visit but we didn’t have the extra time today to check it out. They’re located in a corner building with plenty of after-hours and weekend parking. They have a very rustic, old town look and feel to the restaurant. We really loved it in there. Our waitress, Jessica, was wonderful. She was a lot of help to us while making our selections and just helping us feel at home.
We also got to talk to Mike some while we were there. His business card says “Owner/Operator”. Mike was a great people person. He interacted with all the customers and made sure everyone was enjoying their visit. So for “Staff and Atmosphere” I give them an A.
Our Choices at SoDoSoPa Spirited Cuisine:
We started with an order of Fried Pickles. They were awesome. I never ate many of these little gems until lately. Though I’m no expert on them, these were some of the best I’ve had so far. They’re sliced thin and fried up with a light coating then served hot with some Ranch Dressing for dipping. Again, awesome.
Tammy ordered a Two Meat Dinner with Pulled Pork and Chicken Leg Quarters. This comes with Slaw. She chose Mac and Cheese and a Potato Cake for her sides. The mac and cheese was pretty good. It had plenty of cheese and was done with spiral noodles instead of basic elbow macaroni. The potato cake was excellent. I got a small taste, Tammy loved it. The slaw was good but not my favorite. It was a nice compliment with the smoked meats though. The chicken leg quarters were very good. They had a really good smoke flavor as well as being tender and moist.
I also choose a Two Meat Dinner. Mine with Pulled Pork and Ribs. Slaw also came with mine. My sides were Baked Beans and Fries. The baked beans were pretty good. I’d say above average. They did make a good choice to go with the pork. The Fries were excellent. They were hand cut style. The ribs were good but to me, could use more time on the smoker. The smoke flavor just wasn’t embedded enough for me. The pork was better. It had more smoke flavor than the ribs. They use a simple seasoning which does not overpower the flavor of the meat. SoDoSoPa Spirited Cuisine serves their meats with sauces for you to dip or mix in.
Final Thoughts:
All in all this was a very nice stop. The people were great and the food was good. If you go down to the Outlet Shops and you want to get away from that crowd, here’s a nice place you can sit down, relax and get a good meal. Check out their web-site too. They offer a wide variety of food to choose from. We enjoyed talking to Mike while we ate as well as after we finished. Jessica was wonderful. She knew the menu and the sides and was very helpful with our choices. And she was just a nice, friendly person to have for a waitress. We do go to the Smithfield, NC area periodically for shopping. I do look for a return visit.
