We managed to find Sooner BBQ totally by accident. One weekend we decided to go to the Cheese Shop in Stuart’s Draft, VA. Before making the turn to the Cheese Shop I decided we should eat lunch so I wouldn’t rush my wife. About the only thing I saw was a Hardee’s and we were heading that way. Driving pass a small shopping strip we noticed a large smoker out by the road and only the end of a sign saying “BBQ”. Yep, we made a U-turn and back we went to check them out.
They have a nice size dining area. It looks to have combined a couple of what would be shops to give them more room. I can imagine them needing the extra room. This place is a gem. Everything we ate was killer.
I had the pulled pork and brisket combo with potato salad and baked beans. Tammy had the brisket with green beans and potato salad. I have to admit that I was reluctant to get the potato salad because I’m accustomed to a mustard based style. Theirs is more of a German / Amish style using mayo instead of mustard. Let me just say keep an open mind, I’m glad I did. It was really good. The baked beans and green beans were also very good. Both were seasoned very well.
And the meat you may ask…I thought I was in bbq heaven, not that I believe there really is such a place. But it’s nice to dream sometimes.
Both the pork and the brisket were smoked to perfection. Both were moist and tender. I really can’t separate the two because both were so good. I’d love to try the ribs sometime but I don’t know if I could get away from the pork and brisket.
Have you ever had the ribs at Sooner BBQ? Let us know how they are. I’d love to hear about them.
You really need to try this place out. Traveling on I-64 it is well worth the slight diversion off the interstate to eat here. They also have the Cheese Shop and a nice antique mall in Stuart’s Draft. Spend a little time there, you’ll really enjoy it.
You can find them on the web at: www.soonerbbq.com and also on Facebook.

We completed against Sooner BBQ recently in Harrisonburg. Nice folks, didn’t get to try their Que.
We didn’t get to meet them when we ate there but the food was wonderful. Do you have a business or just like to cook in competitions? How did you do?
