Square Fire BBQ

Today we will check out Square Fire BBQ. This was a place we found during my amazing return trip home from my sister’s. We were returning from my sister’s home in WV after our Christmas get together and took a serious scenic route. After we ended up in Mt. Airy, NC we came back up the Blue Ridge Parkway for some relaxing scenery. Unfortunately the weather went bad with rain and then fog. Along with the fog there were scores of deer along the road. So off we went at Roanoke, VA to take Hwy. 460 home. By the time we got to Bedford the weather had not improved and seemed to be getting worse. We decided to spend the night in Lynchburg. Great decision.

The next morning we were heading out when Tammy kept looking for a new bbq joint for us to check out. We’re running out of spots on 460 that are anywhere near home. So at Farmville I hit Hwy. 15 and headed north. I tell you we took the long way home. So we ended up finding Square Fire BBQ and stopped to check them out.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Square Fire BBQ is a fairly new restaurant. They had been open about 1 year when we stopped in. It’s a nice little spot in a row of shops. The shops are on Jefferson Davis Highway not far off of the I-95 Ladysmith exit. The young lady who took our order was very sweet. She was very patient with us while we ordered. The young man preparing the meals in the kitchen I believe was Gus. If not I apologize for the name error. He was also very friendly and when we talked to him at the end of our visit he was very grateful we had stopped in.

This is truly a family run business. Gus smokes the meats and the rest of the family helps with the homemade sides. He is still new at smoking meats but doing a great job at it while he learns. So let’s move along.

Tammy’s Choices at Square Fire BBQ:

Sliced Brisket Combo with Mac & Cheese.

Tammy ordered a Sliced Brisket Combo with Mac & Cheese. The combo comes with 1 side. She added a side of Slaw to even it out. The combo also comes with cornbread and a drink. The slaw was a good mayo based slaw and a very nice choice to go with her meal. The mac & cheese was wonderful. It was nice and thick as well as having plenty of cheese. You know it’s hard to beat homemade mac & cheese. The cornbread was also very good.

The brisket had an excellent flavor. There was good smoke and it was moist and tender. For anyone who has smoked brisket before, you know it’s easy to mess it up. I know I’ve thrown a couple away before. Gus is doing an impressive job with the brisket considering his limited experience.

And My Choices at Square Fire BBQ:

Square Fire BBQ

Sampler Plate with Sausage, Ribs and Pulled Pork.

I went with a Sampler Plate with Sausage, Ribs and Pulled Pork. The sampler plate comes with two sides so I chose Potato Salad and Baked Beans. The beans were good, but to me not great. They were just a little too soupy. Now the potato salad was great. I loved it.

The sausage was really good. It wasn’t spicy, just a good mild sausage. It would be nice to have a nice mustard sauce to go with it but I really had no problem finishing it off without sauce. The pork had a very good flavor. It had some smoke but it wasn’t overpowering. I tried a little with their sauce and it was good. However, I ate most of it without sauce. That’s the way I like it. The ribs were wonderful. They were lightly sauced and had a good mix of smoke, sauce and the meat’s flavor. They really did a nice job on the ribs.

Final Thoughts:

So I do believe that Square Fire BBQ was a very good stop. This would make for a good spot for those traveling I-95. The Ladysmith exit is out there between Richmond and Fredericksburg. At their location it was not an overcrowded big city. They are a nice family run small business. These are the spots we love. Both of the people we met there were very nice and seemed rather humble. I think it was a good choice.

By the way…I let my sister and one of my nieces know when we got home. It only took us 31 hours to get from WV to home. Normally about a 6 hour drive. “Enjoy the Ride”.
