I’m not sure where I want to start with Stokely’s BBQ and More other than just to say WOW! We took a Jeep Ride to Burlington, NC to look for some new cowboy boots and found this place. I just wonder if the people in Burlington know what they have. So I’ve already tipped my hand about this one. Keep reading and I think you’ll see, give them a try and I think you’ll agree.
Where’s Stokely’s BBQ and More Located?
Stokely’s BBQ and More is located on S. Church St. in Burlington, NC also known as Rt. 70. They are very easy to get to off of I-85 / I-40. Just exit onto University Dr. and go to Church St. They are at the end of a shopping center beside Food Lion. GPS will get you right to them.
The Restaurant and Staff:
They have a medium size / average sized dining room. The staff keeps it very clean and neat. There are old window frames with mirrors hanging on the wall with just a few decorations. They also have a chair rail around the room with tin roofing below the rail. Very simple and very neat.
Our waitress, Taylor, was awesome. She met us as we came in, seated us, and took our drink orders right away. She was super friendly and very helpful with the questions we had about the menu choices. We also met the owner, Eric Lupton. He told us that he had been in business about 3 ½ years. He was also very friendly. Everyone we met at Stokely’s BBQ and More seemed to go out of their way to ensure that the customers were happy. Just some great people to chat with and get to know a little.
Our Choices at Stokely’s BBQ:
When Taylor came to take our order she brought us a basket of hushpuppies with a blended butter in a
cup. These things were out of this world. We thought about asking for more of them because we weren’t sure what we wanted to order but didn’t. We just moved on with our order.
Well now comes the real lowdown. I want to start with my
appetizer, the Brunswick Stew. They have a sign at the door that says their Brunswick Stew is hot. I thought no big deal, I like it with a little heat. When I ordered it Taylor also told me that it is hot. That’s fine I told her. I will tell you that when they say it is hot, they mean HOT! But if you like hot it is very good. If you’re a fan of just a little heat you may want to stay away from it. Or give it a shot if you feel brave.
I survived the Stew and moved on to my meal. I ordered the three meat platter. My choices were the Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, and Ribs. My sides were the Fresh Cut Fries and Baked Beans. Everything we ordered rocked! The fries were excellent. The beans had a great seasoning. The ribs were wonderful. They had a nice smoke flavor and a really good sauce on them. Normally I prefer no sauce on the ribs but the sauce at Stokely’s BBQ and More was fantastic and not over powering.
The pork was just as great. It had a nice smoke ring and some bark mixed in giving it an excellent flavor. As much as I liked it without sauce, I had to try their other two sauces, Eastern NC and Lexington Sauce. Both were really good and neither one over powered the flavor of the pork. But for some reason I just fell in love with their Lexington Sauce. Even though it goes against my instincts, I finished off my pork with that sauce. Actually I liked it so much that I bought a large bottle to bring home with me. When I finish it off I’ll have to see if they will do mail order. If not, I guess there will be another Jeep Ride heading that direction.
Then there was the brisket. Sliced about ½” thick, burnt end quality around the edges and just enough fat to keep it tender. It was just awesome. The taste of Stokely’s BBQ and More’s brisket was outstanding and quite possibly the best that I’ve had to this date. And we have eaten a lot of brisket from many areas of the country, yes including Texas.
That pretty much takes care of mine so onto Tammy’s order. She also ordered the three meat platter just so we could try one more meat. She wasn’t giving up the Pulled Pork and Brisket so she added the Smoked Ham to hers. She chose Mac & Cheese and Sautéed Yellow Squash & Onions for her sides. The mac & cheese was homemade and very good, not dry and plenty of cheese. The squash and onions were even better. Sautéed to perfect tenderness and also with a ham seasoning.
I don’t want to short change the ham because it was really good too. It would be an excellent choice if you happen to have someone with you that doesn’t care for the other choices. Though I cannot imagine that. Their ham was like a sugar cured ham that had been smoked to add more flavor to it. Really good idea to prepare it that way.
As if we didn’t have enough to eat we had to check out the desserts. Tammy saw the sign on the sidewalk when we arrived with the list of homemade desserts and ordered the Chocolate Chip Walnut Pie when she placed her meal order. She thought she knew what she wanted then Taylor asked if she wanted ice cream on it, chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate? What else is there? Tammy was sold just because they offered it. Let’s just say that the pie lived up to the meal. The one small taste I was offered was incredible. About the
time I finished up my meal Taylor brought out a sample of some Strawberry Cobbler that Eric wanted us to try. It was just simply delicious. The crust was moist with a little crunch around the edges, I loved it. And yes, I did let Tammy try a small taste.
Final Thoughts:
People have asked me where my favorites are. Some want to know about bbq, while others ask about brisket or ribs. Normally I would tell them I have several places depending on what I wanted. This was true until now. I know I’m going out on a limb here but I have to say that based on this visit, Stokely’s BBQ and More would have to be my favorite all around BBQ Joint to date. Not to down play others that we’ve been to. There are a lot of great places out there. But just like in competition cook-offs there can only be one winner. And keeping with that thought, winning today doesn’t assure a win in the next round. You have to stay on your toes.
Your Thoughts:
So now that I’ve had my say I want to know what you think. This is where I ask for your input. Let us all know your feelings. Some will be in agreement with me and others may not be. We want to hear it all.
