We recently made a stop at A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que while passing through Princeton, WV. I had seen them on line while working out trip plans to my sister’s house. Since we pass through Princeton when traveling to my sister’s I was excited to find this place. I looked at the Yelp reviews, saw the pictures, and really was looking forward to trying this place out. Everything looked great.
Where is A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que Located?
A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que is located off Hwy. 460 in Princeton, WV. They’re not far off of I77. I used my GPS to guide me to the little shopping center that they are located in. Not really hard to find.
The Restaurant and Staff:
When we arrived at the restaurant we were not greeted. There was 1 young lady working the counter and serving the food. At the time we were there she was waiting on a pretty large group. Once we got to the counter she was very nice and pleasant. I think she was overwhelmed by the number of people there at one time. This was a Sunday afternoon just after 12:00.
The restaurant itself was not overly friendly or inviting to a stranger. There were a few posters on the walls but nothing to give it a hometown or local touch. It just wasn’t a place that made you feel welcomed. We did stick it out and placed our orders. I kept thinking of the rave reviews on line.
So we were still hoping for some outstanding Que from this place. After all, their name implied it, A Taste of Memphis, and all the 4 and 5 star reviews I saw gave me hope.
Our Choices at A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que:
Tammy ordered a Regular Pulled Pork Platter with Homemade Chips and Cinnamon Apples. The pork had a sight smoke ring but no smoke flavor. The pork was over powered by a sauce which was too sweet. Her chips were burnt. Her highlight, the apples were very good. She should have also received Texas Toast with her meal but they were out of it so they gave her a hamburger bun.
For my meal I really wanted to try everything. Then I saw it, The Bar-b-que Sampler Platter. It comes with Regular Pork, NC Pork, Ribs, Smoked Chicken and Kielbasa. My sides, French Fries with special seasoning and Baked Beans. Starting with my sides here’s what I got. The fries were regular frozen crinkled fries with a little dry rub type seasoning on them. They were just ok. The beans tasted like a can of baked beans, not top shelf brand and not very thrilling.
My regular pork was the same as Tammy’s. Too much sweet sauce for me. The NC pork was not NC pork. Again it had a slight smoke ring but no smoke flavor. It was then covered with what seemed to be just vinegar. That didn’t make the cut. The smoked chicken was dry and again lacked flavor other than the sauce. The ribs were tough. They almost seemed like they had been boiled and cooked in sauce. The kielbasa was actually decent. It was not great but compared to the other meat choices that I had, it came out on top.
I have to say that I had a mountain of food on my plate. It was bad enough that I had to pick a little at a time just to get enough to eat for lunch. The kielbasa and the fries made up the main part. The rest I just threw away and we left.
Desserts:
With the lunch we had we didn’t even consider having dessert at A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que. I was not going to spend more money and take that gamble.
Final Thoughts:
You know, I really hate to write a review like this. People make their livings at the restaurants we visit so I always look for the positive even if I’m not thrilled with the place. I like to think that maybe the restaurant was having an off day. However, when you order a platter with 5 different meats and only 1 of them was decent, I just don’t think it was a bad day. Sorry guys. Tammy’s apples and the young lady at the counter were the high points of this visit. I don’t know what I missed that the people giving all the stars on the reviews saw. All I know is that nothing at A Taste of Memphis Bar-B-Que would draw me back. I threw a lot of food away and I’m a firm believer in not wasting food. I hate to throw anything away. After visiting this restaurant I cannot recommend it to anyone and unfortunately would actually recommend not going here. I don’t know what else to say about this one.
