Texas Pit BBQ

Today we’re heading back down to North Carolina to visit Texas Pit BBQ in Angier, NC. They’re located on Route 210, W. Church St. We came in from I-95 by way of Highway 64 and I-40. It seemed like it took forever to get there. We returned home by taking Highway 210 to Smithfield, NC and picking up I-95 there. This way seemed much quicker plus we had a nice ride on 210.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Texas Pit BBQ will be celebrating their 3rd anniversary about the time of this posting. Congratulations to them and I hope you have many more in store. Tonya is the mastermind, cook and pitmaster here. She along with her husband, Jason, run the business. Jason says he gives all the credit to her and he does everything he can to help and support.

The restaurant’s interior has slat boards and corrugated metal walls. It has a real cozy and relaxed feel. They have a medium sized dining room and also have 8 – 10 picnic tables outside. Everything inside was very clean.

The entire staff stayed very busy preparing, serving and cleaning. This group worked very well together. We placed our order at the counter. DJ took our order and made recommendations. She helped us to get the most we could so we could sample everything. She was really super friendly and helpful. Someone else brought our food out. She was funny. I ordered so much she placed my food in the middle of the table like we were sharing it. Remember, I travel with a cooler. We all got a kick out of that one.

Tammy’s Choices at Texas Pit BBQ:

Texas Pit BBQ

Two Meat Plate with Sliced Brisket and Sliced Smoked Turkey Breast.

Tammy ordered a 2 Meat Plate with Sliced Turkey and Sliced Brisket. She chose Corn Pudding and Hash Brown Casserole for sides. Corn pudding is just not my thing so I didn’t try it. Tammy loved it. The hash brown casserole was great. It had shredded hash browns with a creamy cheesy mixture and could it be a hint of jalapeno? I think so. Either way it had a killer taste.

The brisket at Texas Pit BBQ was wonderful. The combination of mesquite and oak to smoke the meats gave them a great favor. It also came with a good smoke ring and some burnt edges, nice. The smoked turkey breast was sliced thick and smoked with a good rub on it. The turkey even had a nice smoke ring. I thought it was some pretty good turkey. Tammy says it was awesome turkey, so I stand corrected. All of this came with a big slice of Texas Toast.

And My Choices:

Texas Pit BBQ

Brunswick Stew at Texas Pit BBQ.

I ordered a 4 Meat Plate with Pulled Pork, Ribs, Hot Links and German Sausage. My sides were Texas Pintos and Roasted Red Potatoes. After the food came I realized I forgot to order Brunswick Stew so I went back for that too. Now you may begin to see why the lady thought we were sharing.

The Texas pintos were very good. They may have a pinch of chili powder in them. I loved them. And the roasted red potatoes were wonderful as well. Red potatoes cut into quarters seasoned and roasted perfectly. They had a slight crunch on the edges. I am so glad that DJ helped me choose them. The Brunswick stew was wonderful. It was full of meat and veggies. The stew had a fantastic flavor. I’d go back for that.

Texas Pit BBQ

Four Meat Plate with Pulled Pork, Ribs, Hot Links and German Sausage.

The pork at Texas Pit BBQ was awesome. It had a great smoke flavor, nice smoke ring and plenty of bark mixed in. I didn’t even consider sauce. Again the mesquite and oak wood came through for some great tasting meats. The ribs were to die for. Once I sampled everything I went back to the ribs and didn’t stop until they were gone. They had a great flavor, nice char on the outside and I loved them. Their German sausage is some great sausage. Jason said it comes from an outside source then Tonya does her magic to it. Whatever they do works. This isn’t like a summer sausage. I’d go back for that too! Finally the hot links. They are not like you may think of. Many times you get little red sausage links. Not these. They are also outsourced and then prepared by Tonya. It looks a lot like the German sausage. It is so hard to find good sausage for some reason. I know where to go now. I wonder if they can ship. Needless to say, there were plenty of leftovers this trip.

Final Thoughts:

This was a great stop for Patrick’s BBQ Trail. Everything tasted wonderful. All the employees were hard working and seemed to love what they were doing. Very friendly place to visit. Tonya is so hard working. She only spoke to us when we came to her work station so she didn’t have to stop. Her heart is in taking care of her customers. This also reflects in the rest of the staff. Everyone wants to be sure you’re happy with your meal. As for me, I look forward to another visit. I definitely recommend you stopping in here for some great bbq.

Texas Pit BBQ is where I am headed when I am in their neighborhood…and I have been known to make a special trip just to go there! I am not originally from NC and am not a fan of the Eastern NC style BBQ that is found almost everywhere around these parts. It amazes me how much smoke flavor gets into the meat, without drying it out. I have my favorites, the brisket and chicken along with corn pudding and roasted red potatos, but honestly everything we have tried has been awesome! The owners and staff are always helpful and friendly; that, combined with the down-home ambience and yummy menu make this my go-to BBQ stop!

My absolute FAVORITE BBQ Ever! We have been huge fans since their first week, and have loved every bite since! I wish I could go there more than once a week! We LOVE the brisket, hot links, turkey, pulled pork, and the best dang potato salad you can get!! This is as close to REAL Texas brisket, as I have been able to find since leaving Oklahoma in 1985!

5 or 6 of us went here based on one of your reviews. We ride motorcycles almost every week, and try many BBQ (and Ice Cream) joints within a couple hours from Raleigh. For me the high-water mark has always been the Pic N Pig in Carthage. Mostly cause they do it old school not to mention an active air strip 25 feet from your table. Having Pork, Beef, Turkey and Chicken is the mark of someone doing it right. Pic N Pig does that

Most BBQ in my mind is psst whatever, It all tastes the same. That preconceived notion was challenged last weekend when we went to the Texas BBQ in Angier. WOW! Not only do they have all the main courses, but the portion sizes are the largest we’ve been served bar-none. I took your advice or maybe your wife’s and got the hash brown casserole and the potato salad. Did the 2 meet plate with their smoked turkey and sliced brisket… It was so good I never used or wanted any type of sauce on any of it. Full of flavor amazing portion sizes and lots of options to combine main and sides…

I wouldn’t give the employee’s as high a mark as i do the food. They just seemed uninterested in being there much less serving anyone. Maybe it was just a bad day.

Mike, thanks for the comments. Glad you enjoyed the food as much as we did. Sorry about the service. Hopefully it was a bad day for them. I know everyone was very friendly and engaged in their work when we went there. I do appreciate you reading my blog and checking them out. We are several hours from there but have been making the trip to visit a few restaurants down there. Take care and thanks again.
