We made it to That Good BBQ in Downtown Suffolk the other day. It was actually our second attempt. We tried on a Friday evening about 5:00 and the sign said “Sold Out”. That was a bummer but we didn’t let it stop us. They opened at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning and we were there by 11:45. Not gonna stop us this time.
This restaurant has been opened for less than a month and must be taking off pretty good to sell out. They opened in an old brick building in the downtown area, not far from the police station and municipal center. So it’s probably a pretty good spot. The building is fixed up nice. Very clean inside. When you enter you go to a counter and place your order. The menu is on a large board behind the counter. Everyone there was very nice, including the owner. He came around to the tables to talk to people and to make sure everything was good. Very nice guy and a retired Marine. Inside has a few decorations but not many. Like I said they’ve been open for less than a month. There are several tables and one long picnic table inside the dining room.
So here’s the run down on our meals. Yep, early lunch and we went for it.
I ordered the two meat combo which comes with one side. I chose the moist Brisket and Pulled Pork and Baked Beans with Brisket bits. You also get Hushpuppies with the meals. Let me tell you, the moist brisket was very good. It was moist and really tender, just melting in your mouth. It had a really good smoke flavor along with the natural taste of the brisket itself. It also had a nice smoke ring on it. I ate most of it without sauce but had to try their homemade sauces too. I thought the Original Sauce was the best but they also have a Bourbon and Bacon flavored sauce which was pretty good too. The pulled pork was also very good. It too had a nice smoke ring and good smoke flavor along with the meat flavor. Not a lot of heavy seasoning. I also ate most of my pork without sauce but I did try them with it also. In addition to the Original and the Bourbon and Bacon Sauces they have a NC style Vinegar Sauce. It was good also but I still like the Original the best if I were going to use a sauce. The beans were really good too. They came with chunks of brisket in them to add to the flavor.
Tammy ordered the two meat combo like I did. She chose the Lean Brisket and Pulled Chicken along with the Baked Beans. Well the difference between the Lean Brisket and the Moist Brisket is simply that the lean has little to no fat which to me seems a little dryer. Don’t get me wrong. The lean was really good too. Again with the smoke ring and smoke flavor. Not much he could do to improve it. The pulled chicken didn’t have as much smoke flavor. It is actually better with one of the sauces. But I’m not a big chicken fan anyway. I’m there for the bbq and brisket. And I forgot to mention how good the hushpuppies were.
As another added touch with your meal you get some dill pickles, sliced onions, and a hot pepper on the side. This is something you see out in the mid-west areas of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas. Don’t worry the pepper is not super-hot. If you like hot sauce you’ll be ok with it.
One last thing about this place. While we were eating we watched two ladies get served their lunches. They had ordered sandwiches. The sandwiches came out with very large buns which looked homemade. When I say very large, I mean huge.
OK with all of this greatness there has to be something that didn’t please me, right? Well kind of. Their prices are very reasonable but the portions were a little small. I’d be more than willing to pay more for a larger portion. The amount served is probably plenty for the average eater, but maybe offering a “Large Plate” for a higher price would be good for those of us that like to make pigs of ourselves.
Just a thought.
None the less…You have got to try this place out. They are closed on Sunday so keep that in mind when deciding when to come. Also they advertise that they are open until 8 (I think) or until the meat sells out. I’d suggest lunchtime on a Saturday. That worked really well for us.
They are not on Facebook but do have a website.
