We found The Hungry Farmer after a day of antiquing. We were actually in Blackstone, VA when we did a search. I didn’t realize that South Hill was that close to Blackstone. So Tammy finds this one and reads up on them a little. They don’t claim to be a bbq restaurant but they serve all the right stuff. Either way the reviews looked pretty good. And since we were getting hungry we took a nice back highway ride down to check them out.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The Hungry Farmer is located in a row of old business on Mecklenburg Ave. in downtown South Hill. They are pretty close to where Business Rt. 58 cuts through town. The row of old business have been fixed up to look really nice on the outside. The folks of South Hill are doing a nice job revitalizing their historic downtown area.
And the inside you may wonder. The inside of The Hungry Farmer looked great. A lot of work has gone into fixing this place up. They’ve made it look and feel so good. We were very comfortable and relaxed. We also had the opportunity to meet Scott and Tammy, the owners. Both were super nice. Scott does the meats and sides, Tammy does the desserts. They make a wonderful team.
Our Choices at The Hungry Farmer:
Tammy chose Pulled Pork with Slaw and Fresh Cut Fries. The slaw was really good. It had a sweet mayo base. Scott said he’s been making it since he was 8 or 9 years old. The fries were addictive. We both loved them. I do believe it is hard to beat fresh cut fries. Maybe the extra time and effort makes them so much better. The pork was very good. It had a great flavor. At The Hungry Farmer the pulled pork is served with sauce but you can get it on the side if you prefer. Tammy did just that. The sauce was good, similar to a Kansas City type. It just wasn’t needed. Tammy went without the sauce.
I went for the Ribs with Baked Beans and Fresh Cut Fries. Since I already told you about the awesome fries I’ll move along to the beans. The baked beans were wonderful. Great flavor and a nice thick sauce made them a perfect side for my ribs. The ribs had a really
good flavor but were a little on the tough side. They normally come with sauce. I had the sauce on the side as well. I did eat some of the ribs with the sauce. They were good either with or without the sauce.
As a note I did talk to Scott about the ribs. He actually brought the subject up so I went with it. He told us that he’s having problems with his supplier. He knows the ribs need to be better so he’s working on a supply solution.
Desserts:
Well since we’re talking about homemade everything, we had to try the homemade desserts too. Tammy had Chocolate Cake with a mint frosting. It was awesome. Even though I don’t normally care for chocolate and mint together this cake breaks the mold for me. Tammy loved it.
I had to try their Waffles with Vanilla Ice Cream and Butterscotch Syrup. They will give you a choice of syrups, I just happened to want the butterscotch. This was an amazing dessert. I’ve never had waffles and ice cream before this. So The Hungry Farmer has won me over for this combination. Of course you do have to wait for Scott to cook the waffle. Maybe 2 or 3 minutes. The only bad part of that is sitting there thinking about this delicious creation yet to come.
Final Thoughts:
I guess you can tell that we really liked this place. When we stopped there I didn’t know if I’d even run The Hungry Farmer on the blog since they are not claiming to be a bbq restaurant. They are a Family Restaurant with a wide variety of food to choose from. Scott and Tammy were great to talk to and get to know a little. They are both hard working and love what they do. I would definitely recommend stopping here if you’re in or near South Hill, VA. They have a wonderful laid back and relaxing atmosphere along with some great food. Take a little ride and see what I mean.
