We’re going to pay a visit to The Salty Pig Smokehouse Co. in Mechanicsville, VA today. This is another brand new bbq restaurant. I really love it when people send me information about restaurants to try. The Salty Pig opened on Feb. 28, 2019. About 3 weeks later my sister-in-law sent me the picture of an article about them opening. Nothing else, just the article. Well she hadn’t been there but once she read the write-up in the paper she decided to let me in on it. So a couple of weeks later we made the trip to check out all this rage. Was it a lot of hype or are they the real deal? Just read on and you’ll see.
The Restaurant and Staff:
The Salty Pig is located in a shopping center on Chamberlayne Rd. near the Food Lion. They have a medium size dining room. Very new and very clean. They do have a lot of cow pictures on the walls. Maybe to promote their brisket or maybe like the cows that tell you to eat more chicken. Whatever the reasoning, the dining room was very comfortable and inviting. Everyone there was running around waiting on people. We arrived at lunchtime and they were jamming. One thing you’ll notice here is that it doesn’t matter who your waitress or waiter is, if another one walks by they will ask if you’re doing ok. Everyone just chipped in together to make things run smoothly. I’m pretty sure I will mess up the spelling with our waitress. We had Monique and she was wonderful. But like I said they were all working together. It was great.
One thing I will tell you is that if you want ribs you have to visit them Tuesday through Friday. I have to admit I was a little disappointed to come on a Saturday and not be able to get ribs. Just be sure to keep this in mind so it doesn’t happen to you. Anyways, here we go with the food.
Our Choices at The Salty Pig:
On this trip Tammy ordered a The Salty Pig Platter with two meats. She went with Sliced Brisket and Pulled Pork. Her sides were Mac & Cheese and Slaw. The slaw was a very good mayo based slaw that was wonderful with the pulled pork. The mac & cheese was excellent. There was more than one type of cheese in it and the macaroni was firm making a really good side dish.
The brisket had a wonderful smoke flavor along with the seasoning and the taste of the brisket. She had the lean cut and it was excellent. It wasn’t super moist like the fatty brother of the lean brisket but is was not dried out either. Many times brisket gets over cooked and dries out. Not this brisket. The Salty Pig makes a bbq sauce that goes great with the brisket. It is tomato based and kind of a combination of Kansas City and Western NC. It was excellent with the brisket if you like sauce. We asked if they sell it but not at this time. And the pulled pork was just as good. It had a slight vinegar taste mixed in with the smoke and seasoning. We had plenty of bark mixed in with the pork too. We were very happy.
I went for The Salty Pig Platter but with three meats. I wend with Sliced Brisket and Pulled Pork as well but couldn’t resist the Smoked Sausage to go with it. My sides were Cheesy Potatoes and Baked Beans. Let me just say that the beans were killer. They were a mixture of pork-n-beans and lima beans with green peppers in a great tasting smoky sauce. And oh my goodness, the cheesy potatoes were outstanding. I’m so glad I ordered them. They were chopped up potatoes with thick gooey cheese baked to perfection. I loved them.
We already talked about how wonderful the pork and the brisket were. Let me just add that the sausage did not disappoint either. It’s a Jalapeno Cheddar sausage with a nice smoke flavor. If you like a little heat give this a try. It’s not sweat rolling down your brow while you cry like a baby hot. That pretty much covers it. It’s just a really good sausage.
Final Thoughts:
So when we paid our visit The Salty Pig had been open for about two months. My thought is that the staff had a lot of practice prior to opening. They were awesome. Most of the time with a brand new business you will see areas that need some work. Not so much here. I can’t emphasize that enough. They deserve a lot of credit. The food was wonderful. We didn’t get to meet the owner. After two months of non-stop running he took an afternoon off to rest a little. Well maybe next time. I will give him credit and answer my beginning question: The Salty Pig is the real deal. They are worth the drive. I believe you’ll be as happy as we were. Thanks for a great new spot on the BBQ Trail. And, thank you Barbie for the tip.

We are now regulars every Wednesday night … You are right the beans are killer and that sauce I put on everything. And the fried deviled eggs on Wednesday and Sunday evening awesome
Fried deviled eggs I think I can live without. Tammy would probably go for them. I’m glad you put that out there for others to see. Not many places you can get something like that. Thanks for adding to the post.
I don’t like that there isn’t a choice for a plain bbq sandwich. I would rather have a tomato based sauce, which I could apply myself, than vinegar based. I would even be ok with an option where the tomato based bbq sauce is already mixed in.
I went in and tried a sample of the bbq and it was soaked in vinegar. Not a fan at all. Im disappointed. No thank you.
Sorry to hear. Ours wasn’t soaked in vinegar sauce so I’m not sure what to say here. I do thank you for the comments. Always two sides to a story. Thanks.
Have been twice, out of food both times !!!!!!!
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they will work that out with experience.
I enjoyed the restaurant as well, but being a “wing” lover, I was disappointed in their wings. They were dry, chewy, and lacked flavor. Hopefully it was just a bad day for wings. I will absolutely go back and try other options. The restaurant is cute, comfy, and staffed very well.
Nancy, So sorry to hear about your wings. Hopefully they’ll be better next time.
I’m not really a wing person so we didn’t try any of them. Thanks for the comments. Take care.
Hey Patrick,
Still hoping you can come to Kansas City for BBQ sometime. Or at least St. Louis (where I live now.)
We can talk about your choices when you are able to finally come to the Show Me State. 🙂
Blog looks great!
Thanks Matt. Would love to make another trip out that way.
Thank you for all your help.
I haven’t eaten there as of yet but just wondering how is it eating of off cardboard containers and what looks like brown paper? With bbq sauce and beans etc: I’m just not sure how i would like that.
Don, I’m really not sure how to respond. The containers are made to have food in them. Kind of like Chinese food containers. You don’t taste the container. What you will find is there is some great food. In the end it is all up to you to decide. Take care. Thanks for asking.
