We found The Surf’n Pig in Avon, NC while driving down Highway 12 through the Outer Banks. I love it when we just stumble across a new bbq restaurant. We decided that we had to try them on our way home. Good choice.
First impression when you walk in is that it’s a small startup location. They have a couple of tables outside and you walk up to a counter to place your order. Then the surprise, they have another room behind the counter area with inside picnic tables. This area is pretty large. There’s also a lot of what seems to be storage area that could be converted later. It looks like there used to be some type of convenience store there before but I’m not sure.
We were greeted when we entered by an employee in the kitchen area while she was putting someone’s order together. She was very friendly. Once she finished she came out to take our orders.
I ordered the BBQ Platter with Hatteras BBQ Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese. The Mac & Cheese was good and the Beans were really good. The beans have a little kick to them like chili powder, not too hot, just a little spice.
The Pork was very good. It was chopped pretty fine but not minced. I think pulled would have been even better. They have a different flavor from the smoke than usual. I’m not sure what type of wood they use but it was refreshingly different. We both loved it. I tried three of their sauces on it but stayed with eating it without sauce. Not that the sauces were bad, just that the bbq didn’t need it.
Tammy ordered the Brisket Platter with Mac & Cheese and Hawaiian Cabbage. The cabbage was really good, but again, it is different. They add pineapple to it to get a sweet taste. If you like something sweet with your meal you’ll probably like it.
And the Brisket you may ask. Well it is killer. It’s super moist and tender. Theirs has a very large smoke ring around it and wonderful flavor. There’s no way I’d mess that up with any sauce no matter how good a sauce is. It just should not be done.
Both of our meals came with fresh dinner rolls. Pretty good though I like my hushpuppies better.
Well I only have two small draw backs for the Surf’n Pig.
One is they don’t have dessert, or we didn’t see it on the menu.
My biggest complaint as made with some other places is they need a combo-plate. I would have loved to try their ribs but we couldn’t combine choices to make it happen. OK, so I need to go back.
If you’re going down thru the OBX towards Hatteras you need to get your timing right so you can eat in Avon. It’s well worth it. I look forward to our next trip down that way.
Give them a try and let me know what you think. The more opinions the better.
I couldn’t find a website for them but they are on Facebook if you want to take a look.
