So what do you think you know about Virginia Barbeque in Carrollton, VA? Yep, they’re a chain. Someone once told me that there’s a reason a restaurant
becomes a chain. Most of the time it’s because they have good food. This is usually true in the beginning but sometimes they fall off the mark. Well we’ll have to see.
Where Is Virginia Barbeque?
I believe they are based out of Richmond, VA but we visit the one located in Carrollton, VA. They are located on Route 17 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, just a couple of miles south of the James River Bridge. They are in The Shoppes at Eagle Harbor.
The Restaurant and Staff:
When you enter the door you go to the counter to order. We’ve always been greeted as soon as we walked in. Most of the time after placing your order you just have a seat and they will bring your food to you. They usually check on you to be sure everything is ok. The staff here has always been very friendly to us.
The dining room is simple with tables down each side and a row in the middle. Some local decorations and a few articles about their beginnings. Nothing fancy here. Just sit down and enjoy.
Virginia Barbeque is good in the sense that they offer VA and NC style pulled pork. Again I prefer the NC style. The VA style comes with a red bbq sauce. They always give you a generous portion.
What We Ate at Virginia Barbeque:
On our last visit I had the Pork and Ribs Combo. For my sides this time I had fried okra and Brunswick Stew. The stew was homemade and really good. It had a tomato base and a little spicy. I really enjoyed it. The problem is that it’s not a regular menu item. Sometimes they have it and sometimes they don’t. The okra was also good, just nothing outstanding. I got the NC Style Pulled Pork. That’s my favorite from here. It has a slight vinegar flavor and is nice and moist. It does have a nice smoke ring but it could use more smoke flavor for me.
When I ordered my ribs I was asked if I wanted the sauce on the side. This was new to me and I jumped all over it. They were very good without sauce. The meat had a good smoke flavor and just fell off the bone. More and more I’m getting to where I want my ribs without sauce so I can taste the ribs. On this visit to Virginia Barbeque the ribs were right on time.
Tammy got the VA Style BBQ with mac & cheese and green beans. The mac & cheese was good. The beans were very good (if you like green beans). The VA style comes with a tomato base sauce cooked into it. It was good but I didn’t think it was as good as the NC style. It just had too much sauce and over rode the taste of the pork. If you get the NC you can add sauce at the table if you wish. They offer several different flavors of sauce.
Oh and just a note, the onion rings are also very good.
My Thoughts:
All in all Virginia Barbeque is a nice little stop for some good Q. If you’re on Rt. 17 near the James River Bridge, you’re close to them. Always friendly and usually pretty fast. Though I would not put them in the top rankings with some other restaurants, Virginia Barbeque is a good stop if you’re in a hurry and want some pretty good food. I’d give them a go and see what you think.
What You Think:
So I know that there are others out there that have eaten here. They could not stay in business without a local fan base.
