We’re going to pay a visit to West Salem Barbecue in Salem, VA today. Salem is located on the outskirts of Roanoke for those that may not know. Tammy found them when we were riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway coming home from North Carolina. Yes we do like to take the long way/scenic route any chance
we get. So we were getting close to Roanoke and needed to find something to eat and then take a more direct route home. So let’s see what we discovered.
The Restaurant and Staff:
West Salem Barbecue is located on Main Street in what appears to be the historic area of Salem, VA. They’ve refurbished an old brick building and made it look very nice inside and out. Everything was very inviting and comfortable. They are a fairly new restaurant. We were told they opened in April 2019.
Our waitress was Danie. She was so friendly and definitely a people person. We really liked her and she was very patient while we studied the menu. She did a wonderful job taking care of us. Everyone we met here was friendly.
Our Choices at West Salem Barbecue:
Tammy ordered a Two Meat Plate with Burnt Ends and Smoked Turkey Breast. She had Mac & Cheese and Slaw for her sides. The slaw was very good. It had a slight vinegar bite to it. The mac & cheese was wonderful. It was very cheesy and delicious. The smoked turkey had a fantastic smoke flavor and was nice and juicy. Even for the non-turkey person that I am, this was very good. Yes, I loved it. Now the burnt ends at West Salem Barbecue were great. I was actually very surprised that a fairly new restaurant would have burnt ends this good. Both of Tammy’s choices were wonderful.
Well I also went with a Two Meat Plate. I chose Pulled Pork and Sliced Brisket. I picked Bourbon Brisket Beans and Potato Salad for my sides. The potato salad was really good. It had a different taste. Was told it could be sour cream but it didn’t seem like it to me. I don’t care for sour cream and I really liked the potato salad. The
bourbon brisket beans were awesome. They had such a different flavor. The pork was wonderful. It had a great smoke flavor and a nice smoke ring. The rub and flavors came together very well. The brisket was killer. I liked it even better than the burnt ends. The smoke and seasoning was wonderful. It was nice and tender too, no knife needed so you know it was done right.
Final Thoughts:
West Salem Barbecue was a wonderful stop along Patrick’s BBQ Trail. Not far off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke. Everyone there was very nice and friendly. The food was awesome. Our waitress, Danie, was wonderful. What else could we ask for? And all of this in a fairly new restaurant. The food was what you’d expect from someone who has been smoking meats for a long time. I look forward to another trip out that way. It’s always good when we find places near the Parkway that we can visit. Heading out Hwy. 460, rolling down I-81, or just meandering along the Parkway, this is an excellent spot along the way to check out some great bbq. Look them up and give them a try. I think you’ll be glad you did.
