Tammy and I made a run out to Wildwood Bar-B-Que in Powhatan, VA the other day. We had seen them before and made a note so we would return to check them out. So when we were leaving Richmond, we decided to make a little detour to give them a try. They were easy to find. Located right on Hwy. 60 West as you go into Powhatan.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Wildwood Bar-B-Que is located in a strip of shops right beside a Tractor Supply Company. The restaurant was very clean and had a friendly atmosphere. The evening we showed up everything was being run by young people. Let me just compliment the management on these young folks. They were extremely friendly, nice, and helpful. I don’t think you could have asked for any better service. I didn’t ask at the time but our receipt says our order was taken by John. So John along with the young ladies working with him were all wonderful. Thank you for the good service.
Tammy’s Choices at Wildwood Bar-B-Que:
Tonight Tammy ordered a Sliced Brisket Plate. Her sides were Mac & Cheese and Slaw. The plate also came with a choice of Hushpuppies or Muffins. Puppies it was. The mac & cheese was fantastic, very cheesy and tasty. The slaw was right on. Finely shredded with a mayo base and a very good taste. The brisket had a good smoke flavor and came with a little sauce on it. Sliced thin and it had a really good flavor.
And by the way, the hushpuppies were outstanding. Fried up crunchy on the outside and cooked perfectly on the inside. We loved them.
My Choices at Wildwood Bar-B-Que:
I went with a Ribs and Pork Plate. I chose Brunswick Stew and Baked Beans for my sides. I also went with the Hushpuppies. The Brunswick stew was good. It was different than any other that I have had. This one had sort of a creamy broth. Not really white and super creamy but not the red broth most have. It’s hard to explain. It was made with chicken plus the potatoes and veggies. I really did like it but it’s hard to describe. You need to try it if you like Brunswick stew. The baked beans were wonderful. They had a nice thick sauce and a really good flavor.
The pork was chopped and was excellent. I ordered the plain. You can also order either NC or Red Sauced Que. The plain had a good smoke flavor and a nice smoke ring. Seasoning was kept simple so the smoke and pork flavors came through nicely. I was able to try some sauces with the pork. More to come on that. The ribs were outstanding. They had a great flavor to them. There was a little more sauce on them than I’d like. I was able to take some of it off and really enjoy the ribs.
Sauces:
I tried out three different sauces at Wildwood Bar-B-Que. One was the Wild and Sassy. It’s a red sauce with just a little kick. Not really hot but just enough to taste. It’s a very good sauce. Next was the Wildwood Red Sauce. This was a very good version of a homemade red bbq sauce. It was good but I liked the “kick/sassy” one better. Finally was the NC Vinegar Sauce. This was a strong vinegar sauce and was good as long as you don’t overdo it. Use it sparingly.
Final Thoughts:
You know, I really enjoyed our visit to Wildwood Bar-B-Que. They have a nice location, a clean dining room, good service and good food. I would definitely stop in here again. I was amazed at how well the young folks worked together and how they interacted with the costumers. So for anyone heading out Route 60, if you’re going through Powhatan why not stop in and check them out for yourselves. I think you’ll be glad you did.
