Today we’re going to take a little trip down to Willy’s Bar-B-Que in Franklin, NC. Ok, actually we were already in Franklin. We didn’t just take off for a 7 hour trip to check out a restaurant. That’s even a little far for us. However, what’s vacation time without trying out the bbq in different areas? Once we arrived in Franklin, Willy’s Bar-B-Que was our first bbq stop. Just for the record when you travel out that way, they are located on Cunningham Rd. just off of Bypass Hwy. 441.
The Restaurant and Staff:
Willy’s Bar-B-Que is a good sized restaurant. The dining room is clean and the staff is very friendly. We knew that once we found them on line we had to check them out. Their logo has a pig in a Willys Jeep. How could we not go here? Our waitress was a blast. Unfortunately I don’t have her name to include. But she had a great since of humor and did a wonderful job taking care of us.
Willy’s Bar-B-Que is a family style restaurant so they have many choices other than bbq. They pretty much have all the bases covered so you can find something on the menu that suits you. So here’s how our visit went.
Our Choices at Willy’s Bar-B-Que:
Tammy ordered a Chicken and Brisket Combo with a Baked Potato, Slaw and Squash Puppies. The slaw was pretty good though it had a little too much mayo for me. Tammy liked it better. And the baked potato, well it was a baked potato. It was good but how much can you say about it? As for the squash puppies, they were supposed to be like hushpuppies but with squash in them. We found no signs of squash, but they were really good.
The chicken was good. It had a nice flavor, lightly sauced and not over cooked or dry. It was like you’d cook on the grill in your backyard. Good stuff. The brisket also had a good flavor to it. This is not the win a national title brisket. However, it is good, come to a restaurant and have something different brisket. Over all I thought they did a pretty good job on it.
I ordered a Half Rack of Baby Back Ribs and Pork with Okra, Fries and Squash Puppies. Yes my puppies were just like Tammy’s, no squash to be found but very tasty. My okra was good. Nothing was done to
spruce it up but it is good fried okra. The fries were the same way. Nothing extra to season them up. They were good though.
The pork at Willy’s Bar-B-Que was really good. It had a good smoke flavor. I also tried it with the 2 sauces on the table. One was a vinegar sauce and the other was a tangy sauce with vinegar. Both were good but the pork didn’t really need them. The ribs were outstanding. They were slightly sauced but not over powering. The ribs were my favorite of the night.
Final Thoughts:
I enjoyed our visit to Willy’s Bar-B-Que. Even though this doesn’t seem like a raving review, they were a good restaurant. They’ve also been doing this since 2002, so they have something going for them. The people were awesome and the food was good. Like I said, this is a family restaurant. I know at home we fuss about not having a local family restaurant that serves good food. There are always specialty restaurants and chains to go to but the good local ones are hard to find. This is one of those places. I do believe you should give them a try to find out for yourself. If you travel to the Franklin, NC area or live nearby, check them out and see what you think.
